Preview of th' comely New Customize Journal area for me proud beauties

We know it's important to you to get the look and design of your journals and communities just right, so we've been working on making the Customize Journal area easier to use. The team has put together significant changes, including adding in screenshots and making the flow easier to understand. Here's a quick preview of some of the changes:

Since this is a big change to a popular area of the site, we'll launch the new Customize area as a beta test at the end of the month. Stay tuned to [info]news for full instructions on how to participate in the beta test.

What else ye got?!! Be that it matey..Try Ou' "Lazy SMS"

One thing about the LiveJournal engineers is that no matter how busy they are, they'll still try to find time to hack on cool projects. [info]whitaker was always frustrated when he was out and about and encountered something he wanted to look up or read more about, but he didn't have access to his computer and then later on he'd always forget. Lazy SMS is his solution to that problem.

Here's how to try it out:

1) Make sure you're set up for TXTLJ (Read more about TXTLJ)

2) Send "lazy somewordhere" to TXTLJ from your phone (Example: "lazy treasure chests" or "lazy pirate ships")

3) LJ automatically looks up "somewordhere" in Wikipedia and:

3.1) If an article is found, its contents are automatically posted as a private post to your journal

3.2) If there's no article, a placeholder is automatically posted privately to remind you to do a search.

What are you going to look up using Lazy SMS? Answer if yer brave or ye walk th' plank!

Only if you have broadband. About 50% of the USA (and sadly that is mostly LJ is all about) is still on dial-up at home. Why?

1) they live somewhere that it is not offered, like in a small town or the rural countryside. Not everyone lives in a big city, and not all big city neighborhoods have broadband access, especially if one lives in a poorer section of the city.

2) not everyone can afford broadband. Heck, some can't even afford dial-up and have to use public libraries' computer to get onto the 'Net. Poor people need to have 'Net access, too.

3) while people are at work, they should be working, not goofing off on the 'Net, unless it's okay with their boss. So, having broadband connection at work does not count.

I don't like the new customization screen. The old one wasn't that hard to use and it had the added bonus of lacking a lot of superfluous graphics that would make it load slowly for anyone that doesn't have broadband. The new customization screen with its little pictures seems like it would really slow down anyone who has dial-up. Also, the prospect of having to go through possibly fifty-seven pages of journal layouts just to find the one you want is really intimidating and if it's intimidating to me (and I do have broadband) then I don't want to think of the people with dial-up.

So please, LJ. Think of the dial-up users. Not everyone can afford fast internet.

(P.S. Maybe you guys could give us an option to use the old Customization page when you implement the new one? I remember LJ did that when they came up with S2 and it really helped.)

I have one question about the new customization page -- where in the heck do I put my overrides? I went to customize a community layout today and the spot for them is GONE.

which, 'round here, is apparently a long damn time.

livejournal...i don't even know what to say anymore. 9 or 10 pages in, I doubt you'll even hear - which is sad, because this is the kind of thing you really need to be listening to, all the way up this slimy little chain.

i've watched with something between interest and horror ever since strikethrough earlier this summer...not because i was personally affected, but amazed all the same. the trainwreck dilemma, i guess.

boldthrough was equally trainwrecky entertainment. again, though...didn't affect me, it was just fun to watch.

september was when things started getting really good. that pepsi max v-gift debacle - in a NEWS POST - was enough to make my lip curl, and it was then that i posed the question to my friends list of other options for journaling. your fairly hasty removal of said gifts ads, and the silence that has become so typical of you, was also interesting.

i looked forward to this month's news post not for any actual content...no, i'm afraid i gave up on that with the pepsi max. i was waiting for - and not disappointed by - the trainwreck factor.

you know what? screening the barak/abe macro is one thing. (go ahead and banhammer me for it, but i thought it was funny.) but screening users who are merely telling you they don't like the new journal customization?

advertising movies of a highly mature subject matter (and probably questionable artistic merit, as long as we're at it - again, i haven't seen it but i've heard it's quite funny) on the heels of the two banaramas?

your CUSTOMERS having to preface their posts with "please don't delete this" and "please don't screen me, but i think..."

i'm disgusted and saddened by your behavior in the last year or two, and i can't stay quiet anymore. it has become absolutely absurd.

the S2 style system? newsworthy.
the merge with SixApart? newsworthy?
the TOS issues that have yet to remain addressed? newsworthy.
telling us about the launch of ads and sponsored communities? newsworthy.

filling your news posts with ads and sponsored community info? no. not newsworthy. and despicable, given the stance of "yes we know they're ads and paid users won't see ads". i'm seeing ads, livejournal, and i'm not happy about it. not one bit. i've been a paid user for 5.5 years now, a year at a time plus extra icons; you do the math.

i'm not happy with having to watching you blow a new corporate sponsor every month under the guise of a news post (especially this month's, which is rather cantankerous given the TOS problems you STILL HAVE NOT ADDRESSED).

and i'm not happy knowing that this will go largely unheard by the people who need to hear it. i'm really not.

so, livejournal, that's enough. my paid account lapses sometime in may and i'm turning off automatic payments and, dy'know, i don't really need 729 icons either. i've fed the dog and it continues to bite and i'm tired of it.

shame on you. shame on you.

oh, wait - "please don't screen me!"

And for a place that's supposed to be kid friendly, it's kind of confusing to see you guys promoting a rated R movie that isn't exactly kid friendly...

Wonder if they are desperate for money? Wonder if the permanent account sale didn't net enough for them this time around? I suspect that a lot of users who were going to buy one, didn't, after Strikethrough '07. And 6A/LJ have only themselves to blame for that.

A few days after creating my account, I received an email from Virgin offering 20% on my next purchase as a part of their welcome package.

Nice! Now that's customer service...er, well good marketing. I just purchased my tickets. Now to save money for all the shopping that I'll do. :P

Okay, let's see. All those contests you advertise here are for US people only, as far as I can see. So they are not of interest to me even if I would appreciate ads in the first place, which I do not. So where are the news????

Ah, I see: I can use Lazy SMS. Hmmmm. Again, only if I live in the US. Darn. What else? Ah, a new Customize Journal area. Hmmmmmmmm. What was wrong with the old one? Did I complain about it? No. Was there something I complained about? Yeah, I've been messaging YOU with complaints about your Notification System all months, care to explain why you update stuff that is working and continue to spam my mailbox with comment notifications I don't want??

What else? Ah, "Knocked up" is out on DVD. Great. Another US based information I can live without.
THE MOVIE HAS NOT EVEN OPENED HERE!!!!!!

Stop pushing US Related stuff down my throat and start doing something for your international users.

So, last but not least: Do not even think about screening my comment. Ignoring (or screening) comments hoping that the dissent amongst your users goes away doesn't work. It only makes it worse.

I must join the others in expressing my disgust over the way this has been handled. Screening/deleting comments and banning users from commenting in the journal simply because they don't agree with you or your crappy politics is where I think you have gone so far I can't even try to rationalize this.

You owe us an explanation. A big one. Especially for those of us who have waited around, as patiently as can be expected, for that policy document you promised us and for word on what exactly is going on up there at 6A headquarters. Our patience for the last, what, six weeks or so has been rewarded with an annoyingly flippant ad campaign masquerading as News and the screening or banning for people who dare to disagree with you.

Disgusting and pathetic.

I worked in a grocery store during college. And the biggest thing they hammered into us during training and orientation was CUSTOMER SERVICE. Do your best to help the customers, answer their questions, get them what they need, and make them feel like you care about them, even if you couldn't care less. And you know what? Our store was almost always busy. In my specific department, we had people who would come back and talk to us for five or ten minutes before placing their order, like old friends--we even knew some of them by name. That is customer service. If I treated a customer the way you have treated us, I would have been out the door before I could blink.

You are horrendously out of line. Stop posting ads on the NEWS community and calling them "sponsored content," like you think we're stupid enough for that to make things okay. Stop hiding and come right out and say something. At this point, I think most of us would take ANYTHING that, particularly anything that resembled that policy document you promised us or some answers to those questions we've been asking for the last couple of months.

I also have to say that at this point in the game, I don't think you can get away with a "We're working on it" post--I still can't believe you ignored our requests for even that much, so that we knew we weren't forgotten. That might have flown a month ago. But after waiting for six weeks and getting this? Not going to fly.

And since it seems that we have to add this in our comments now, pathetic as it is, "Please don't screen this comment!" There. I said it. I sincerely hope you're happy.
