New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the servers suffer enough as it is? That was the excuse we kept getting for not turning birthday reminders back on, wasn't it? Or did enough people leave from all your other screw-ups that you have CPU resources to burn now?

Save us from the sever lag and get rid of Snap.

Snap.com doesn't take up LJ's server resources. It's JavaScript, which your computer executes, and it's loaded from servers Snap.com owns.

Every day that you don't give a response to your userbase about the negative response to the new customization page and the snap.com previews, I'm going to comment here.

Yes, I know that's not going to ~~~help much~~~ and it's a waste of my time, but hey, maybe if the angry comment on this post go max, someone will pay attention!

i disabled it in my journal and had to find out from another LJer about the method to disable it on all other links in the settings that pop up with the preview. still, it's pretty dumb and ugly, and it seems that it's overwhelmingly disliked. i'm not looking forward to having to update cookies on any other computer i access LJ from just so i don't have to see something that shouldn't have been implemented in the first place!

I really don't like these "preview" bars of external websites. They're ultra sensitive and I'm still on dialup! (Yes, I know I'm a dinosaur, but we're still out here!)

Is there a way to turn it off our flist too? Or at least, not have them pop up unless you hold the mouse over it for more than like...a nanosecond?

Thanks for your consideration in reading this.

I wouldn't recommend keeping Snap. I mean, thank you for telling how to turn it off, but I do not think that it will be used or appreciated the way you might have thought.

Remember when you were changing the website layout and WARNED us about it weeks in advance so we could prepare for it?

I think you seem to have forgotten you did that, since you haven't since. Don't put up a new home page that hides the news section and then put up new things without warning. Don't give us a new customization layout without warning or an opt-out. Don't add stupid sneak advertising and expect people not to notice.

We, as we have proven before, are not stupid. You people on the other hand...

Vote number 812468732 against the whole snap wankery. Surely you can't seriously believe people actually want this stuff? Popups are despised from one end of the internet to the other, you have to know this, and yet you tack them onto the site and expect us to be happy about it?

If you're doing it for the money, be a little bit honest and bloody well say so, and stop pretending you're doing us a favour, hey?

Snap = bad, for all the reasons listed above. (The automatic enabled for basic, by the way? Even worse. Now I have to go through all my RP/character/joint fiction journals and disable them one by one, because even if I have Adblock disabled, other people coming to my page might not, and I don't want them to see that nonsense.)

New Customize Journal Page = bad for anyone who actually wants to customize anything, as opposed to newbies content with premade layouts, for all the reasons listed above.

I'd post a detailed comment listing all my reasons, but I did so several times on other posts and nothing came of it, so. *shrugs*

I really like the new customize area. For some reason the option to search by theme name was not easy for me to find -- at first, I was a bit frustrated by not being able to go directly to Refried Paper or Flexible Squares, etc. But once I found the search box, I had no more problems with it. I really love the quick previews!

I don't see Snap graphic previews because I use Adblock (so much love for Firefox!). When I've seen similar popups in the past, my first reaction was "Ooo, nifty!", but they got pretty old pretty quickly. I'd probably turn it off after a day or two.

It does not seem to me to be something that would be very popular among LJ's core users.

I don't understand the vitriol about Snap, though, because it does seem to be easy to turn off.

I know that the powers that be are probably not even paying attention to the comments past the first page, but things that should be easy, like finding where to change your links list on the new customization page, shouldn't be made difficult unnecessarily. People shouldn't have to dig to find simple things. And I know that you think implementing all these Vox-like changes is a really good idea, but the customization page should do more than just showcase the Vox layouts that you've imported here. People should be able to easily select and alter the older LJ layouts as well.

I'm really not understanding why you're trying to make this site look like a Vox clone. Vox may be a Six Apart creation, but it isn't that good of a site.

I have to say, I'm extremely not impressed by the customize area. I make my own layers/etc on a regular basis, I tinker around with S1 (is it even an option anymore?) from time to time, and the way before was a bit clumsy, but actually pretty easy to understand. I'm no stranger to customizing my journal. I've been on LJ for over three years, I know how it's done.

And the new system confuses the hell out of me.

Where's the quick link to get to my custom layers? How do I make custom layers if I want to make myself a new layout? How do I pick the style I fucking want and not one of these premade pieces of shit? I mean, really, they're probably not pieces of shit, but they're a lot harder to work with for custom layouts than just plain Generator or Flexisquares.

Sure, it's great for people who use premades. But LJ, a huge portion of your users don't. In fact, most people like making their own layouts, customizing the CSS, fucking with coding, all of that. Making us stick to premades only, or hiding the option there is not to like it's something that only the priveleged elite should use is really defeating the purpose, here.

I want my old customize page back. At least it didn't confuse the hell out of me when I changed my layout.

Additionally, why should I have to click five or six different times to change just the title and subtitle of my journal? What was wrong with the way it was before? Was it too easy? Were you not getting enough satisfaction out of driving your users up a wall?
