New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

I've seen those boxes a couple of times. They're just more annoying pop up boxes I'll need to disable. I wish you'd stop putting all of these "wonderful" new features on default.

I saw the new nav bar and it didn't click in a big way that it'd been changed. I really don't bother to use LJ anymore if I didn't notice this. I mean, I did come back to cross post stuff from InsaneJournal and glanced at it, but that's about it.

Either way, I do like having the search option there. I was always annoyed by the fact that I had to go all the way out of some journals just to search for something, when I was supposed to have a nifty "navigation" bar there to help me. : - /

I did see the new customization page and I really wish that you would stop changing that, too. The Old!New one was bad enough to go in and discover after not using that area of the site for a while. It was unwieldly and this looks to be the same type of thing. At least, at first.

The presence of actual previews is good, because the oldest page I remember using didn't always have a preview for the newer layouts. That sucked, because I had to change something and then go run to my journal to see if it worked or not. I also had to refresh every time I changed something, but you guys fixed that ages ago.

Still, what is the deal with repeatedly changing stuff? Yes, I will refrain from OCD comments, because that'd just piss off people and isn't all that necessary. What really needs to be looked at is that damned Scrapbooking feature that hasn't worked well in the three long years I've used and paid for my account.

I am so glad that I have Photobucket and don't really have to care about this site's cock ups anymore. IJ is awesomeness! =DDD

(not that anyone's going to read this who can do something about it, but) Must say, I agree with everyone else who's complained about the new customization layout. It's confusing, difficult to navigate, and it's really irritating to have to continually click on things instead of being able to simply scroll down through the various settings.

There must be some way to give us a choice in the matter, because right now I'm just glad I finished customizing my journals last week and don't have to try to deal with the current mess.

Is it just me, or am I cockblocked from changing my layout? I just created this journal and it won't let me change my theme since this new stupid upgrade.

LJ doesn't have the option of taking them off of your friends list.

You either let Snap install a cookie on your computer, or you install AdBlockPlus and get rid of all LJ's ads. (I prefer AdBlock, myself)

ok number 1, typing all in caps is considered really rude, even in a heated discussion and especially repeatedly. We all get it; you're annoyed that they're screwing with your chi. Message well and truly received chief, just bear in mind that your behaviour isn't big, and it isn't clever.

Number 2, it's fairly evident they do know how to do they're jobs, otherwise livejournal wouldn't be here and we wouldn't be in this situation of having something we hate on our livejournals in the first place. That being said, if you're so keen to shout abuse and give advice, let's see you come up with a better site. Pretty much a put up or shut up request on my part, because frankly you're more than my pocket pc is willing to tolerate.

Number 3, making demands and shouting the odds, in the entire history of man it must be stated, never got anyone anything but a smack in the face from that really pretty girl who keeps to herself in the corner of the bar. In other words, if you're going to complain about something, do it constructively and concisely; people are more likely you listen when you use reason instead of a sledgehammer.

LJ only allows you to disable them on your personal journal. You still have to suffer through them on someone else's journal unless you allow Snap to install a cookie on your computer or you use Ad Block Plus.

For the links, try "Customize Your Theme", and then look in the blue box and you'll see "Links List". The direct link is http://www.livejournal.com/customize/options.bml?group=linkslist

Right below that link in the box is a link that says "Custom CSS", so I presume that would do what you want. I'm on S2, and that's what I see.

Why am I not getting comments left to my own journal in my messages or E-Mail? I'm getting replies to comments I've left on other journals, though.

Also, this is actually quite unrelated, but why the green? Why not some shade of blue to match with your site scheme? The green is not only kind of jarring in comparison to the rest of the site, but it's not a great shade to choose. And I know you're trying to favor S2, and that's why the S2 button is the one in green on the "switch to S1" page, but really, that's ... kind of weird. And even more jarring, honestly.

Hello,

My names Kaitlin and i've been using livejournal for the past 4 years and i've never had any trouble with it. Except for today when I was trying to upload pictures it seemed like the most difficult thing in the world. It never used to be hard and I was always used it but now there's a bunch of new ways of adding pictures but all seem way too confusing. Maybe I just haven't done this in a while so is there any way someone can give me a solution to making it easier to load pictures? Thanks a bunch
