New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

Having snap automatically turned on sucked. It's nice for folks to have the option, but having snapshots of some ppl's inappropriate links pop up when one is at work is pretty bad, folks, and there's not way of preidcting what ppl on one's f-list will link to! There should be a way to turn off being able to see them in anyone elses journal once and for all (cookie needs renewing) without having to use Firefox's blocking method there's a post about it here).

did anyone actually ASK for a new customize journal area? and snap previews as well?

please do "improvements" based on users feedback rather than what the goat think is good. you're giving us exactly what we DO NOT WANT.

Please please remove the Snap Shots. They have been irritating me ever since I first noticed them and went, "what the heck is this crap popping up every time I move my mouse around?"

I can't use a cookie to disable them because somewhere in the vast stores of cookies in my "exceptions" is the cookie that controls these damn things, and I don't want to scroll for six hours through the list and find it and restore it.

Cookies should be for opting IN, not opting out. I'm a paid user and I'm casting my vote for NO SNAP SHOTS.

I cannot express in words the degree to which I loathe this snapshot thing. Why would you people do this?

I really could give two shits about the whole user/6A/innocence jihad war right now, but after reading through the snarky comments, you have to admit ownage.

Amused cat is amused.

Now might be a good time to start trying out the new comment editing feature!

(hint: "I really couldn't...")

Ah, okay - in that case you've mangled the phrase a bit. It's actually "I couldn't care less".

If you think about it, saying "I could care less", means that you do care to some degree, because you have the ability to care to a lesser degree that you are currently caring at. I think what you're trying to say is that you don't care at all.

Happy to help.

Good, then you'll understand how much I don't care about trivial bullshit like the correct usage of cliches. You'll find it really has nothing to do with the context of my original comment.

I fear for your social life [or lack thereof] if all you can find to do in your spare time is troll news posts. Though I've realised some people actually try to get featured in [info]stupid_free, so if the shoe fits...

It really is entertaining when stupid cows act like they know it all. It's cute, in a pathetic sort of way. Kind of like when the fat kid enters a marathon thinking they'll finish. Awwwww.

Seriously. Kill yourself.

We didn't ask for Snap. That's beyond annoying for us dial-up users, and since about half of all internet users in the USA are still on dial-up, you have just pissed-offed your major customer base, since most LJ users are in the US. And now Snap has ads??!! Excuse me, but as a paid member, I pay not to see ads, you know?

And the new customization area sucks. Again, all those themes loading in their little pictures is a real problem for dial-up users. I had to wait until I could get to my bf's house, so I could use his broadband connection, to change my layout. I was very disappointed to find out that I could no longer decide for myself what size I wanted the posting area and the sidebar to be in Component. I was also disappointed to see that many of the choices were gone from the Quite Lickable layout.

Why were these changes made? What was so wrong with us being able to tinker with the pre-made layouts a little?

And the fonts you now limit us to is just silly.

There was nothing wrong with the old customization page. Why "fix" something that was not broken?

Why not do your users some good and fix things that are broken?

Many users can't get email comments from you. There are many ISPs that are affected by this. Are they all blocking LJ for spam? Let's hope not. But these people are paying users and should be getting their email comments. There should be no question about this. My friends who are affected by this mess keep submitting to the LJ help team and get back the worse-than-useless reply that LJ is working on it. That's what I would call customer no-service.

What about the re-written and updated TOS we were promised months ago? We have not forgotten and are still waiting.

These are the sort of things that are broken and need fixing. So get on with it, already.

I absolutely can not STAND the new customization area. It's horrible and if people that are even a little experienced with customizing can't use it, what makes you think people that admit to not knowing can?

At least give us the option of going back to the old style. This is awful.
