New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

It's all very well to disable stupid Snap previews in our own journals, but why do I have to see them on other people's journals when I am logged into my PAID ACCOUNT?

This is ridiculous.

PS: The new customise page is hard to navigate. Can't we have an opt out? Not all of us want to be spoon fed.

Hi, sock puppets! Quick clarification question.

Please tell the folks with the hand up your backside that the decreasing amount of ads in the "news" posts is almost heartening. Balanced with the lack of updates to policy, well ... I'm sure there are already several dozen posters who have covered that.

Quick clarification question:

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

All? Seriously? Nothing goes to 6a/LJ - zero, zip, zilch? Are you sure, posilutely absotively all? Not one penny, dime, or dinar for "overhead"? If so, I have a few v-gifts to send.

To determine net proceeds, LiveJournal will deduct only the actual expenses relating to the credit card transactions. Each credit card provider and payment processor charges varying fees. Typically the fee involves a fixed fee per transaction plus a percentage of the sale price. In determining net proceeds, LiveJournal will not deduct any other expenses, such as salaries of employees, cost of servers, or any other operating costs. The net proceeds will be donated by LiveJournal on its account and not on behalf of the purchaser. Purchasers will not be entitled to any tax credit or deduction otherwise applicable to charitable deductions by individuals.

Can we go back to the old customize area? Because it takes twice as long to find something that was easily found before. Why is LJ wasting time with unnecessary and damaging changes?

The featured themes are really horrid and if you put all themes there are 62 of them. All of this to replace one drop box that let you pick easily what you wanted.

If the aim was to screw things up, then great job.

Especially since it's going to be everywhere and it's ugly.

I think the Snap previews are lame. I usually see them on useless, ad-choked web sites. I hope that isn't SixApart's new direction for LiveJournal.

As for the alleged "positive response" from the LJ community, I invite you to post a poll on the subject. Let us all see, in hard numbers, exactly how positive that response really is.

Okay, I realise this is kinda our fault for not speaking up before you went to all the trouble of implementing the thing, but snapshots is HIDEOUSLY ANNOYING and utterly pointless. The only time I mouse-over a link is when I actually, surprise surprise, want to click it. In which case I a) don't need a preview and b) don't want random boxes getting in the way.

Thank god it's got a disable option, is all I can say. Seriously - stop wasting time throwing around "Features" that are just favours to your business partners and try improving stuff we already have and like.

I just took a look at the new customization page. I like the fact that you can preview how your page will look in a particular theme. That's goodness. It's also not that hard to figure out how to navigate it. It is different than what you had, and some folks just don't like different.

I haven't decided on the snap previews yet. They could get annoying, but they could also prevent me from loading a problematic page, or to determine if someone switched out a link and I no longer want to click it. I'm curious how those previews will fit, however, with links to NSFW content. Could create problems, one might think. The jury is still out.

One question, however, If I was to experiment and try a different theme, would I lose the customizations I have done for my page currently? If so, that's badness, in case I ever switch back. If you don't want to hassle saving them on your side, you could perhaps provide the option to download them as a parsable text file that could be uploaded if one ever switches back to said theme.

That's exactly what will happen, and there is no easy way to get them back either. Finding out about that after the fact was a lot of fun.
