New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

Okay, add me to the list of people who do not want anything to do with this computer slowing snap crap. No, adblock isn't possible at computers I LJ from. No, I shouldn't have to worry about adblock considering I shelled out $150 for a permanent account.

Are you guys actively trying to drive people away, or what?

Trying to drive you away to...InsaneJournal.com, where your permanent account would've been $40.

O, Hai, gaiz...

I'm a drop in the bucket, a Basic account holder...I've had my share of Paid account status in the past. But this Snap thing?

Do. Not. Want.

I'm not trying to sound whiny, but frankly...this sucks. I don't like Snap being here. Please make it an optional thing...

And "positive responses" towards Snap? Please. I'm not the only one to complain about it, and I sure as heck won't be the last.

Get rid of it, or fix the bugs or make it optional (so we can turn it off COMPLETELY), please?

I really DON'T want reasons to leave LJ...I like it here...

If an Adult Community follows all the rules of LJ, i.e. moderated joining, with a very conscientious moderator who often checks the profiles of all 1,200 members (yes, I do this, please give me a medal) to make sure their full birth date is always there, and boots the people who don't comply, does said community have to use the 'Manage Settings' to flag that entire journal as 'adult' and thus limit reading (despite the fact joining is moderated and everything is friends locked) or is the procedure I mentioned, i.e. the moderated joining, and regular user info checks enough?

I just want to stay on the right side of the rules here, because I work really hard to make sure we do.

The fuck you didn't. It was re-enabled when I just checked, and I disabled it a week ago. Didn't you just say it was only defaulted for new basic and plus users?

Also, just a quick question. Did you even consider the problems Snap causes for people with eyesight problems? I bet you didn't.

Not that I expect much out of you anymore, all things considered.

I officially hate Snap previews. For some things it's slow to load and glitchy and it actually made my browser freeze and crash. It's nice to be able to turn it off for your own journal, but it doesn't solve the problem when you view posts on other journals and coms. There needs to be an option so that if you're logged on you just don't see the blasted things. grrr

I suppose it was my fault for assuming my $150 Permanent account would prevent the annoying Snap.com. Clearly I was mistaken.

Just as I shouldn't be subjected to the nonsense that is pointless ads, I don't need to see a preview for some external link. If the said link is something I want to see I'll click on it when I'm good and ready.

I suggest LJ and it's competent team find a way in allowing members to disable this option entirely.

There are only two ways. The first involves letting Snap put a cookie on your computer (I believe you have to roll over an offending link and there's an option on the preview- could be wrong, going on what's been previously said)

Or you can use AdBlock with FireFox.

If someone else has Snap turned on for their journal, these are the ONLY ways to keep from seeing THOSE.

okay, lj, I am one of your more patient and understanding detractors, but srsly 8)

1. I left a long, polite, constructibe two-hour investment beta test review of your new customize area, nice to see it was ignored in favour of people who glanced it over, saw that it was more USER FRIENDLY FOR THE UNWASHED MASSES!!111 and left a comment saying "its gud i liek it." That was seriously the last time I ever spend time on you butts, especially when I've been paying for accounts for years and don't even get a response, jesus christ :')

I was willing to give the new customize area a chance if it had some changes made to fix the large problems, but these problems were actually AGGRAVATED in the final release, and I've moved from "going to try to not be a wanker" to "totally going to be a wanker after all because you all fucking suck."

PLEASE give us the old customize area as an option, ack. This actually makes it considerably harder to DO this, especially for those of us who actually take time and care on our layouts and pour over them for hours instead of just picking a premade and derping around from there.

2. In case you haven't noticed, nobody likes snap.com and wants it gone. At least give us the option to turn it off completely, everywhere, not just our own journals, seriously. You have a lot of irritated customers at this, and I am definitely one.

3. ALL the progress you've made since that whole Strikethrough mass hysteria this summer has ... died. You've stopped answering questions again. You've stopped listening to your customers. You've stopped being upfront, and honest. Once again, you dodge or ignore questions and treat the intelligent, paying, long term userbase like a neccessary evil. I'm getting so frustrated with this, especially after you actually were showing progress. Get some PR. Talk to us. Communicate with us. We are all FUCKING TIRED of feeling like we're sitting here screaming at a brick wall.

Why do your customers not matter to you? Why are you not willing to communicate? Why is it that insane, angry mass fucking hysteria is the only thing that will get your attention? It's sad, how while so many people with an excellent point laugh about the drama llama and martyrdom about the whole strikethrough and boldthrough bullshit that went done ... that is the only time you've ever listened to us.

Ugh. I'm just ... so disgusted. The customization page is not a big deal. It's fucking annoying, but it's not a big deal. The snap.com bullshit is not a big deal. It's fucking annoying, but it's not a big deal.

The big deal here is that you just refuse to talk to any of us, period. We are your customers. We are human beings. Why do you demand that we be outraged and hysterical before you'll listen to us?

If you just want my two cents... it's because teenyboppers from Facebook and Myspace actually have more ready cash to spend than their geekier LJ counterparts. LJ doesn't want us anymore, because we won't pony up for the next shiny pos they want to sell to us. Why talk to or listen to us when they're looking to replace us?

Please get rid of the Snap. It takes control of the browser away from the user (in fact, it looks an awful lot like pop-ups to me), and it wastes bandwidth (some of us still occasionally use dial-up). If you refuse to get rid of it, then make very sure I can opt-out once and never see it again.
