New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

Here's an idea. Next time you want to implement something, don't.
Don't give us new context based ads. In fact, don't give us any new ads.
Just fuck off and let us blog, and maybe we won't spam your servers as badly.

I have a fucking paid account, so why am I still seeing Snap.com's shit on my friend's list?

I like the new customization page.

I love the new V-gifts.

I love the new Bats Theme. I hope they stick around.

I am not crazy abut the snap.com being on LJ.

the new customization area sucks...is there a way to choose if we can still use the way it was before????

I mean I got lost using that one as well, but I was getting better at it, and now here you go changing it all again, and now I cant find anything.

How do you get rid of the search bar in the navigation strip? It's big, it's ugly, and for me, it's totally unnesessary.

Finding interesting lj-people by interest would be like googling popular culture studies research with a search word "Britney Spears".

Happy Halloween.

Okay, I take half of that back because of the new Customise Journal page - although it follows blogger, wordpress etc, it's too radical a change. I'm used to being able to select a base journal style - eg Tranquility, Smooth Sailing - and then customising the CSS. With the new Customise Journal page, there seems to be no easy way to do that if I want to change my base journal style.

Is it possible to incorporate a list of the different base styles into the new Customise Journal page? I'm sure many of the users who use CSS-edited themes will second this request.

No. You can't turn the Snap previews off with Viewing Options. I still see them. I want them GONE.

MAKE IT GO AWAY. For the future, whenever you release a "new and exciting" function, you could start by disabling it by default. Some of us don't want the sponsored tie-in smack you peddle, we just want to blog. Is it so wrong?

I didn't see the Snap option in the uh Viewing Options - I had to hover on a link, click on the circle thingy, and change the preference there.

And yes, they suck harder than a Paris Hilton-brand vacuum cleaner.

GET RID OF THE SNAP.COM BULLSHIT.

ABSOLUTELY NONE OF YOUR USERS HAVE RESPONDED POSITIVELY TO SNAP.COM. YOU ARE LIARS. ELIMINATE IT FROM THE SITE CODE NOW!!!!!

(Failing that: I won't even ask why "opt-in, not opt-out" is so difficult for you to understand; but instead, why the flying fuck are you making this a per-journal rather than per-*user* option? Make it so a user won't see it anywhere, not just that no one will see it on only one journal. IF YOU HAVE TO KEEP IT AT ALL, WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT.)

Well this has been a very useful thread given that I learned how to GET RID OF the horrible snap.com popups. Thank you, LJ users. No thanks to you, LJ.

The new Customize area is ever so much more complicated and graphic-intensive why, exactly?

So pointless. So, so pointless.

I have not yet seen one single comment in favor of the snap.com intrusiveness. Not. A. Single. One. in any of the threads where it's been discussed; not in a single comment in this thread so far. What do you mean by "positive response"? Where? Please provide links.

As a general rule, those that feel most strongly about something are more likely to speak up. There probably -are- people that like it, they just are either too lazy to say something or are afraid to speak out about liking it.

That said, the snap thing is fucking annoying and I had to install Adblock Plus just to get rid of it. Now I need to find a way to turn it off at home on Safari.

Presumably Snap.com feels positive about their presence on your site, but I certainly don't. I'm a dial-up user (yes, yes, Dark Ages) and it's a damn nuisance. Also, in a links heavy post it would be diabolical to read through, not to mention the possibilities for malicious jokes using it. Yes, I know you'll TOS the idiots, but not before my eyeballs have been fried. At least before you had some chance to assess a link risk-free. But now we know why you were so determined to make everyone take responsibility for their off-site links.

I'm not desperately impressed by the hoops I have to jump through to turn off Snap.com if I don't want their damned cookies on my PC. No love, LJ, no love.

The Schools Team is volunteer-based, and we only have so many people available for dealing with approvals. Depending on the country, there are very few or even no volunteers, at least native. Your schools will be reviewed in turn, but it may take a while. (We're also always looking for new volunteers!)

I've been reading through the comments and it seems that there is maybe 5 people at the most that like the new customize page. That's really bad. Like REALLY bad. Did anyone say we wanted this changed? Hmm. I've never had any sort of problem with it.

I think I saw MAYBE 1 or 2 people who liked snap? I honestly don't remember seeing anyone who liked it, so I'm just being generous here and assuming some dumb ass likes it.

Your "research" on finding out who likes what around here? It sucks ass. I love having my Livejournal. I've had one for a little over 6 years. While there have been a lot of good changes, lately, I see no good changes. Maybe I don't like change, but all these changes lately are just... pointless.
