New Customize, V-Gifts, NaNoWriMo & More
 New Customize Area
The new Customize Journal area has officially arrived. Finding the theme you want has never been easier. You can now search by theme, layout, or designer. Read all about it in [info]lj_design. Thank you to [info]janinedog and [info]chasethestars who worked on it tirelessly, and to all of our beta testers for their great feedback. Now, go forth and customize!

Searching for Something?
Aren't we all... Look no further than the control strip in your journal. We've added the search drop-down to all journal pages to make finding what you're looking for a cinch.

Snap: In the Picture
A few weeks ago, we told you about a new tool from Snap.com that provides visual previews on external links within your journal. Based on your positive response, we've enabled these graphics for Basic and Plus users. (Don't worry: If you already disabled the graphic previews, you will not have to do so again. Also, if you don't want to see graphic previews, you can easily disable them within your journal on the Viewing Options page under "Graphic previews.")

Autumn Holiday V-Gifts (and New Halloween Themes)
Autumn is a time of giving, so we added several new autumnal V-Gifts, including a pumpkin pie, red lantern and Diwali lantern.

What better way to give than to send a friend our charitable Give Thanks Turkey V-Gift? All of the proceeds from the Turkey V-Gift go to Heifer International, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

Not quite ready for November? We understand completely. Which is why we added Bats & Ghouls to our spine-tingling Halloween themes.

NaNoWriMo V-Gifts & Themes
Ever dreamed of becoming a novelist? National Novel Writing Month is your chance to make that dream a reality. Participants begin writing on November 1st with the goal of writing a 50,000 word (175 page) novel by midnight, November 30th.

We know a lot of writers on LJ participate in NaNoWriMo, so we've added some cool stuff to keep you motivated. One of our brand new writing themes may be just what you need to keep writing into the wee hours of the night.
(fFrom L to R: Typekeys, Typewriter, Inked and Writer's Block.)

You can also show your encouragement with one of our new Writers' V-Gifts. Choose from one of the four ribbon V-Gifts and we'll donate 50% of the net proceeds to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer's Program. You can also send motivation in the form of an inkwell & quill or a typewriter.

Find out more about LJ's writers' themes and charity V-Gifts and connect with other NaNoWriMo writers.
Are you participating? Let us know in the comments!

Frank's Feeling a Little Grey
So why not put a little color in his life? You still have one day to enter LiveJournal's "Where's Frank?" photo contest. The Grand Prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, and the Runner-Up winners will both receive a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.com. Go to [info]lj_photocontest for all the official rules on how to submit your photo of Frank.

Lastly, from all of us at LJ... HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! (And keep an eye out next week for a haunting Halloween site scheme.)

Kill the Snap previews DEAD

That Snap preview crap needs to be killed. As in disabled, removed, shut down. Terminated with extreme prejudice. A stake driven through its heart. It needs to DIAF and go away.

But, since SixApart will probably completely ignore its users preferences in this matter, here's how you can kill it off on your own:

Go to your HOSTS file (for Windows users, this is normally in the \system32\drivers\etc directory in C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT), and add the following line:

127.0.0.1 shots.snap.com

This will kill it across all LJ pages, not just your own journal, by blocking the loading of the Stupid Javascript Trick code from Snap.

Enjoy. :D

Go to the terminal, and type in "sudo pico /etc/hosts" and hit enter. Enter your password and hit enter. Add the 127.0.0.1 shots.snap.com at the bottom of the list, then press ctrl-X to save and hit Y to approve. Then reboot.

Hostal is a shareware app for Mac OS X that lets you edit the hosts file. It's not free, but it does come with a huge list of ad sites, so it acts as a pretty good ad-blocker right out of the box, which makes it worth the money IMHO.

Thank you; I love you. I was trying to figure out how to make them GO AWAY FOREVER without accepting their skanky cookies on my pretty computer. (Since yo, if I wanted anything to do with them, I wouldn't be trying to turn the damn things off in the first place.)

The HOSTS file is a handy way to permanently kill off all kinds of annoying things. The reason it works is that whenever a program on your computer tries to do a DNS request to resolve a URL, the operating system first looks in the HOSTS file to see if it can find a match before it passes the request on to the external DNS server(s).

In this case, it finds the match for snap, and so any requests for data from Snap will be routed to IP address 127.0.0.1 -- also known as "localhost". So, in essence, any requests intended for snap get looped back onto your own machine, and your computer will be trying to load the Javascript code from itself. :)

I'm sure you can think of other ways to use this trick to "enhance your browsing experience..." :D

I followed the instructions and added the line to my HOSTS file, but snap is still functioning. Do I need to reboot or something for this to work? *is completely non-code-literate*

*Bites fingernails* To even get to that file, I had to click my way through a series of folders which told me at every step "Go back! These are the files that stop your computer from collapsing into l-space! This code is too advanced for you!"

Man, I hope I haven't broken my computer. All my friends are in there.

Thank you SO much for! Strangely enough, though, I'm still getting the previews for people's "Current Location" links. I have no idea why those would be different from all the other external links, which no longer have previews (yay!). Weird...

I seem to have failed in the killing of same.

Looking at it again, it seems I changed the "sample". The other file named hosts is an ICS file, and I don't seem to have the program needed to open it.

I am afraid, as well, when I opened the hosts .ics file that I may have screwed it up, because it now associates with notepad.

It now reads

## Copyright (c) 1993-2001 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This file has been automatically generated for use by Microsoft Internet
# Connection Sharing. It contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names
# for the home network. Please do not make changes to the HOSTS.ICS file.
# Any changes may result in a loss of connectivity between machines on the
# local network.
#

#169.254.147.164 PC245486007190.mshome.net # 2011 12 1 26 0 13 0 343
127.0.0.1 shots.snap.com

Which doesn't seem to be doing anything, as the damned snap balloons are still opening.

Tk

For Windows Vista users, you have to go to the start menu, rightclick the Notepad icon and select "Run as Administrator". Then open the HOSTS file from within that special instance of Notepad, edit, and save. Otherwise Vista bitches at you about denied access and whatnot. :)
