When LiveJournal, Inc., was launched in December the new team made it very clear that LiveJournal was going to change. We also said that we would respect the values and legacy of LiveJournal. But, we can’t ignore the fact that as LiveJournal nears its second decade it needs to make some business decisions.

Over the past 24 hours many of you have asked whether the changes to the account structure (removing the option of creating new basic accounts) is a business decision. It is, emphatically.

Overnight you also raised legitimate concerns about how this change was unveiled - message received, loud and clear. We're still working out how to strike just the right tone when communicating with such a diverse and complex collection of communities.

LiveJournal has been run as a business from its humble beginnings. Since then, it has grown into a pretty successful company: blazing a trail for blogging and journaling, providing employment for many people, building a community of volunteers, and creating a culture of openness and collaboration which is admired across the globe.

And we are building on this heritage. That means new ideas, new features, new colleagues, new offices, new technology, new hosting facilities, new products, new policies and, yes, a new account structure.

The changes will require not only an investment in time, energy and money from us but also engagement, understanding and ideas from all of you.

We hope you will embrace the new features that we introduce and you may certainly criticize the ones you don’t care for. But to make our intentions clear, LiveJournal needs to develop: we don’t intend to undermine the culture of LiveJournal, we intend to invest in it.

Okay, LJ, so you removed the filter we're still owed an explanation, an apology and the previously mentioned good will gesture towards the communities/interests/individuals you marginalized and demonized.

What happened?
Why did it happen?
Will it happen again?
Why should I believe you?

I don't have a statement for some of your questions. I do know that it was a mistake, and not meant to be a judgment or company opinion of any kind. I will try to have better answers as the day progresses.

Thank you for answering while I assume you guys are scrambling to give us a clearer answer.

While I have no reason to doubt your personal veracity (so please, don't take this as directed at you, it's directed at LJ/SUP), that's hard for me to find plausible after the way this site has treated queer users/content creative users/content, non-mainstream users/content, and fandom users/content and the userbase as a whole from the events of Strikethrough onwards.

It's going to take a thorough explanation, a sincere apology and some good-will gesture to make a lot of us believe you.

I should also note that hundreds of users (if not more) who have complained here, on other communities and in direct communication with LiveJournal deserve answers too. Every single one of them deserves a personal apology for the offensive filtering. Additionally it shouldn't be my job to disseminate the fact that LJ is "working on it" across your site. I do it because someone has to; I do it to keep users informed and unified against bigotry and stigma, but it's absurd that I have to. Utterly absurd.

By "mistake", I hope you mean that management has realized that it was a mistaken business decision. After all, the developers didn't accidentally drop the filter in the code. Heh.

I do appreciate your post here, and your promise to have better answers later. Do you think you could get permission to turn this comment into a very brief [info]news post, letting people know that more information is coming soon?

Thank you for responding to our concerns. However, as I'm sure you'll understand, after listening to ourselves communicate with LJ all weekend with no response, it will take much more than one post to satisfy us that something is being done and that we are being heard. In fact, a new post in the News community would probably be a good idea.

EDITED TO ADD: Considering that the code that filtered the interests was announced in [info]changelog, you CAN'T claim that this was mistake. It was deliberate. Now, whether it was something deliberate that had the results intended, or something deliberate that had unexpected results... THAT is the question.

This is pretty ridiculous, both the situation and the fact that I refuse to believe this was any sort of 'mistake'. How do you accidentally filter and censor the things that your customers are interested in? I realize you are not personally to blame, but hey, if you were in our shoes, wouldn't you be a bit miffed as a customer if a company was treating you this way?

I'm so incredibly glad that I've officially taken my business elsewhere. I'm really only here because I've already forked over my money, and by god, I'm going to get what it's worth until my account expires.

THANK you so much for your acknowledgement that this happened, Marta. I love you. Please encourage those in upper management to give us a response very soon about why this happened. Feel free to remind them that we all despise market speak and we want some HONESTLY: why was it only fandom, mental illness, and sexuality that was targetted?

I really appreciate this comment, [info]marta, thank you - it's a preliminary sign that users' concerns have been noted and are being addressed. Thank you for taking that moment to communicate with us; it'll keep us appeased for a short while, as people try to figure out what the heck happened :-)

Just to be clear though, for any senior LJ/SUP decision-making staff who might actually be reading this thread for once in a way - this comment in and of itself is not an explanation or an apology or anything other than an acknowledgement of yet another serious mistake on LJ's part. Hopefully a full, clear and honest explanation and apology will be made in a [info]news post soon, to ensure everyone can move on from this as quickly and smoothly as possible.

thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

and just to say, i'm not directing this at you in the least bit, but i'm not sure if you mean an error in judgment or a mix-up with filters. i know it's hard for me to believe, and i'm sure it will be for others as well, that the removal of such interests wasn't intentional.

and like others, i would like to echo that although it was gracious of you to reply, we would still like a formal LJ announcement about this, not just a few comments buried deep within pages of comments.

But honestly, the explanation for how this was a "mistake" (given that it was announced in changelog and stayed put for ten days, only being reversed once people started complaining) is going to take some doing.

I write fanfiction. I have clinical depression. Right now, I'd quite like to know why LiveJournal thinks my existence is a public embarrassment.

Marta - this isn't directed at you, but at LJ.

You have repeatedly shown you don't care about queer users, about non-mainstream users - and it feels so hostile here when it used to feel safe, like I could be myself here. It has made me afraid here. So please, quit jerking us around - either say, "if you aren't mainstream and willing to pay for our services - leave" or STOP trying this underhanded tactics to make us leave.

Because no one "accidentlly" typed that code. It was a judgment and opinion from someone - either a rogue who needs to be fired or something LJ has done and now realizes it's mistake.

I want to get a paid account again, I want to help support LJ with my money, but I can't so long as this crap is going on.

Marta, thanks for making some sort of acknowledgement. I have depression. I write fanfic - slash fanfic at that. I have family and friends, in RL and on LJ, who don't fit the heterosexual mold. I am so very pleased ::slightly sarcastic tone:: that people with those interests are no longer non-persons in the eyes of LJ.

It would be nice if the larger organisation grovelled a bit, though. Just a wee grovel?

Marta,

Thank you for being nice enough to reply here.

We both know that very specific filtering lines of code, such as what was in the changelog, don't "accidently" get into a live system.

God/dess bless you for commenting here, and god/dess bless you for saying what you've been asked. It has to suck sometimes.

I don't believe in this kind of mistake. It's not like misfiling some paperwork or mistyping a word. There's too many things to be an accident. It's in an area where you have to know that your users are sensitive. Seems unlikely an area that should be treated more sensitivity given the emotions surrounding it would be treated so carelessly.
