LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content!

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

Spotlight community of the week

We can't resist making one last midnight trip to the ol' pumpkin patch. If you adore crazy costumes, fiendish festivities, and bottomless candy consumption as much as we do, this community has just what it takes to light up your jack-o-lantern.

Photos of the week

We received so many incredible photos, we had to close our eyes and point. We uploaded a selection of awesome images at our new [info]lj_photophile community. Please join and start posting (try to keep the width at around 625 for the sake of consistency)! We'd love for you to tell us more about your photos! You can help us select spotlight photos by commenting on your favorites. Once again, we thank you for making our online world more beautiful!

How about an update on the frequent RSS outages? Somehow these news posts have more and more fluff each time with little actual news...

Hear, hear.

Getting information about new features etc. is nice, but there is a fine line between informing your users (which includes informing them of problems etc. as well) and marketing.

Has My Guests gone from opt-in to opt-out? When logging in to other journals I hadn't logged in to for a while to change or confirm my search settings, I noticed it was turned on when I had not turned it on previously.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]astronewt
2009-10-29 06:20 pm UTC (link)
No, it's still opt-in, but that pop-up is rather confusingly done, I agree.

The default setting of the feature itself is still 'off' -- it's still that you specifically have to opt-in to the feature. But on the interstitial pop-up that you see, the already-selected option on that dialog is to turn the feature on.

So you just need to ensure that you don't click 'Update my settings' on that dialog as is -- if you don't want to use the feature, select the 'I don't want to use this' option and then click Update.

And if you're ever concerned that you turned it on and you didn't want to, you can always go to the My Guests field here [http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy] to check whether it's on or off. It's the last option on the Privacy tab.

Photo Of The Week Suggestion
[info]eviltera
2009-10-29 06:03 pm UTC (link)
a suggestion for the photo community, limit posting to the maintainers and have one post every week where users comment with their pictures

this will help streamline it, keep the images in one spot, and make it so all pictures get viewed rather than having to go through pages and pages with only 20 pictures per page.

will save everyone time with viewing, voting and tabulating.

it will also let people watch the community without hundreds of pictures clogging up their friends list

I don't understand that search thing, it's for going through our entries to look for specific terms? If so, why can't it be more advanced to say, limit it by different security levels? Like a drop-down box. Or comments by users? What about for communities? Filtered by users?

I keep running into problems with posting comments and slowness experienced when surfing onto LiveJournal and it's really frustrating especially since we have an express queue of sorts.

If you want to have a newsletter, POST ON LJ_NEWS and leave this to actual releases?!

What's that you say? You want to stop using cuts for a while so people will pay attention to your precious content? Guess what! That's why I'm not watching the vast majority of LJs that do exactly this. Way to lose an enormous contingent of readers!

For god's sake, if I'm interested in this crap, I'll click on the CUT, which you would have in here if you were remotely LJ-civilized. Good day sirs and madams!

Bravo!

It's like they WANT to drive away their userbase, which would be a downright foolish move of them. It's one thing to take away Basic accounts and then reinstate them after folks have spoken up, but then to stubbornly say "We don't give a shit what you think of non-lj-cut entries, we're still not cutting ours!"... is just... bastardly of them.

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter.

No, no, no. This is really truly MADE OF FAIL, especially as long as you guys keep putting trivial non-news-related stuff like answers to the writer's block questions (which I hate) and photographs! This really puts the nail in the coffin about me not renewing my paid account. I can live without phone posts and polls. I don't want to support a company that has such a cavalier and patronizing attitude towards its customers.

Certainly agreed on the writersblock thingumajig (if I want to know the answers to the writer's block questions, I'll go to the writer's block section and click "View Answers", or alternatively add [info]writersblock. Or maybe - knowing what know-nothingness exists on the internet, even in the age of Web 2.0, I just won't bother. I may suffer from the odd bout of blockage, but I don't think it's the sort of block that can be sorted by the Internet being idiotic).

Well, if you can't even show the basic courtesy I'd expect of any other user whose posts are endless, I guess I don't need you on my f-list until further notice. I'm really not interested in all your marketing crap. See you ... oh, sometimes in 2010, I'll check back to see if you have actual news to report then, like about the RSS issues or the frequent slowdown times.

I want to defriend [info]news because I'm sick of reading all this fluff... but I know that as soon as I do, they'll probably start mentioning all the important stuff about policies and updates and features etc again. We just can't win.

POSTCAAAARDS! Yes! This is something to MAKE free time for!

The writters block commentaries are highly amusing in their spectrum. I see much variation, and a wholesome attempt by everyone to do good.

How lovely!

Pumpkins! ...why haven't I bought one yet?
