Important update on notifications

We know you've been waiting for an update on notifications, so we wanted to let you know what's going on instead of holding off until the next newsletter.

LiveJournal has been placed on a spam-block list by an external service used by several email providers. As a result, notifications that are ordinarily sent via email providers that use this spam-blocking service (such as Yahoo!) are not being delivered. Unfortunately, we don't have direct control over this list and cannot simply remove ourselves. Please note that this issue has nothing to do with any service or feature on LiveJournal (such as Games).

We're working very hard to get LiveJournal removed from this spam-block list. This involves widescale efforts to eliminate the root cause of the issue (e.g., certain spammers use external email to spread spam links to LiveJournal). To this end, we're researching several ways to identify legitimate LiveJournal accounts and messages, so we're not as vulnerable to being blocked in the future.

Until this issue is resolved, we suggest you use LiveJournal's internal messaging system (the Inbox) to receive notifications. You may also be able to receive notifications by IM, depending on the client you use (read this FAQ for more details). To update your settings, visit the Notifications tab and select the Inbox option (you can also try the IM option) for all your important notifications. You can then check your Inbox to read your comments and notifications.

We're very sorry that this issue has gone on for so long. Like you, we depend on our notifications. We'll keep you posted on further developments right here in news. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding while we try to resolve this matter.

I'm not really informed enough to have an opinion on whether or not this is LJ's fault/something that could have been avoided, or something that was really unavoidable-- so I'll just say good luck, and thank you for working to fix the problem. ♥

LJ it self abuses spam label

:|
- -
Why such sad face ?
It is a GREAT news! its an awsome chance for LJ to taste their own medicine!
LJ has created compleatley undemocratic system that is based on accusations that are made anonymously. That IS wrong, and down right evil! That goes against anything and everything that is called justice. I say glory to Yahoo! Make LJ taste their own medicine! FORCE them! Make them THINK!!! Becuase it is the one and only last chance to stop the spam label abuse by LJ it self.

The Russian spammers on PM are a huge pain in the ass. I've gone to friends only PMs for the time being, but it's cut off one of the main ways people on my f-list used to contact me.

March 15 2011, 01:29:59 UTC 1 year ago

We cannot stand the spammers. And I'm really sorry we haven't been able to block them all before they start sending the messages. We are working on multiple possible solutions to the problem, based on studying best practices and the patterns we're seeing at the time. (Everything has to be tested on many levels, too, to make sure whatever we implement isn't going to negatively impact any real people.)

You personally are probably aware of this as I think we've spoken before, but for anyone who isn't: please delete these comments & messages and mark them as spam when you get this option. The quicker these are reported, the quicker our system will alert us and we can then dispose of the junk accounts. And we are going to keep working on ways to catch them before they reach that point.

It may not have to do with games, but it's definitely gotta be related to the mass amount of spam accounts advertising e-books and other crap. Maybe if there'd been better control over getting those removed as they were happening, this could have been avoided. :|

Fortunately, I've not had this problem with gmail, but this isn't something to take lightly in any case.

I've gotten three of those damned comments in the last week alone. While my notifications have been unaffected due to using gmail, it's still very perturbing in the first place, and I don't want to fathom the inconvenience and annoyance it's been for non-gmail users.

Futhermore? There should have been update in the last news post if not before. Did y'all just start trying now or do you just think it's not that important to keep your users apprised of persistent issues?

Had a similar problem with a server a few months ago. We lost a couple of days trying to get our I.P. out of spam-block lists, we even paid to some of them so they would re-check our server. Finally me moved all the email traffic to a different IP inside the same server. It took us many hours of thinking but then 10 minutes to solve it.

I assume you guys have a very capable team up there, but just wanted to give my two cents.

Russian spammers have been posting in communities and disabling the comments so no one can report or flag them (at least in some layout styles). Comm mods need to have the option to set posts so they cannot have comments disabled.

Thank you very much for this update - I'm glad you're finally posting openly about this.

For those who aren't receiving notifications at the moment, I recommend switching to a Gmail account for the time being if possible; they still accept mail from LJ. (I hate the threaded conversations, so I don't use the Gmail interface, but you can set Gmail to forward your mail to whichever other account you prefer.)

The suspensding - system created by LJ stinks!

Finally THEY get to feel how it is to become victim,
of unfair spam labeling .

May be, and only may be, they will come to their sences and understand what kind of system they them selfs have created. Once you are accused of spaming, here on LJ, you never EVER get to know who is the accuser ? have you EVER seen any democratic system of justice that works like that? the only think that comes to mind is a dictatorship and slavery. May be, and only may be, they will suffer enough to stop using terms like "lemings" by LJ administration towards all the LJ users. May be, and only may be, the will suffer enough to learn to applogise!

The problems with the inbox option is that:
1. You have to vist LJ to read if you have notifications.
2. If someone deletes their comments the message will notify as deleted and not with what the person wrote. I like reading what those deleted messages are.

Anywho, thank you for updating us on the situation! I do appreciate it.

yeah would be great if the deleted comments stayed there. sometimes they are used as pm's so we really have the right to see what was there.
other than that i'm actually liking it so much that i'm just waiting to get any missed comments and then i'll switch my notifications off, i'm always at lj when i'm online anyway :D and i tend to use the link and go to lj anyway, sometimes even just to read the comment in lj's layout.

LiveJournal have got themselves blacklisted by the Spamhaus Block List for providing spam support services, in this case, hosting websites for spammers.

This is why comment notifications aren't getting through: the SBL is a widely respected and widely used email blacklist. They're not saying LJ are spammers or indeed sending spam email, they are saying that LJ aren't taking down journals set up by spammers, so they're effectively helping the spammers to spam. Most email spam directs the mark to a website, so providing those websites is a serious matter to Spamhaus.

This is worrying: it means LJ probably aren't responding to complaints about hosting the spammers' sites. I think Spamhaus would have tried sending email to abuse@lj, though possibly not under their own names, as you want to be sure that reports from ordinary users are handled correctly, same way as restaurant reviewers don't book saying "I'm Jones from the Times". The detailed information from Spamhaus lists a huge number of spammy journals, and at least a couple of them were still there when I tried them. This doesn't bode well for LJ's competence, to my mind.

Edit: Gmail probably aren't using the SBL. They bought Postini a while back, so they probably have the technology to do it themselves. I don't know about Hotmail and Yahoo.
