New beta version of Friends page, plus other features and fixes

With the release of version 98 yesterday, the Friends page has been redesigned as a system page for all users and is now available for beta testing by everyone. As you may have already seen, there will be a link at the top of your Friends page allowing you to switch between the new and old versions throughout the beta testing period.

For full information on this redesigned page, plus other new features and bug fixes, please see this post in the lj_releases community. Thank you!

I totally have a poll on this, for my own curious factgathering. (Not inflammatory, just checking the spread.)

I don't know you but I liked your idea for the poll so I totally filled it out. :)

TL;DR of the entirety of the comments that will come to this post:

Nobody wants this. Please get rid of it or make it optional for everyone. LJ is not Tumblr and does not want this. People code layouts in specific ways so they can read their friends page and this systematically destroys that. People tend to complain about a lot of crap on these posts, but this one is really serious: you've screwed up immensely and lost a lot of respect this go 'round, and it's enough to legitimately make people rage quit.

+1 for "make it optional". People who want it can use it; people who don't can use the old style, everyone's happy.

DO NOT WANT!!!!! of course LJ doesn't care one iota what thousands of people say....once this is forced upon me, i will no longer use my friends page at all as the layout is blinding, not user friender and just NO, NO!.....it's almost like you WANT people to leave LJ....

it's almost like you WANT people to leave LJ....

I am seriously beginning to think this is the thought behind all of this... how much will they take before they all just leave?

Hello!

If the new friends page is a system page, does that mean that it's no longer theme-able?

matgb

October 30 2012, 17:04:40 UTC 6 months ago

Yes.

It does.

and if it happens, unless they introduce a proper dark background system theme I will be forced to finally abandon my account completely and never consider paying them any money again.

This is a terrible decision.

I customize the look of my journal so I can read my friends page looking the way I want it to look. It is the main LJ page I look at.

Infinite loading on Facebook overwhelms my browser (most current version of Firefox, so not outdated) on a regular basis. I hate it. It is a terrible design idea for any site where users might want to comprehensively read all new content.

In short, your ideas are bad and you should feel bad. Do not do this. 10 year paid user here, who will cancel if you go forward.

Could you please provide a screenshot of what the new friends page is really supposed to look like? I get two different versions (one with white main background (OUCH!), and one with a grey main background).

What screen resolution is this designed for? There seems to be no scalability, and the readability is very poor too. Kind of unfortunate on a site where the users do nothing but read.

I saw the thing about the new page and switched. It's horrible. I switched back. Why do we customise our pages to the colours and fonts we want if you're going to change them?

LJ used to be fun. Then you broke it and people left. Now it's just bad.

emmavescence

October 30 2012, 18:25:33 UTC 6 months ago

This is pretty much what I was going to say. Horrible idea, do not want, etc. The friends page is the main thing I use LJ for these days, clearly it's time for another recruitment drive to Dreamwidth to see if I can get a critical mass of people over there so I don't have to bother here anymore, as it's clear the management and developers aren't listening to what the users want (if the Russian users want this then more power to them, but keep the western LJ as it was or you're going to lose the majority of the users who stuck around here).

Customisation is one of the main reasons I love LJ. I want to read my Friends page in my own format, not in some standardised feed, like Facebook. Absolutely no-one wants this change and my Flist is full of people outraged about it. So why on earth are you doing it?

Infinite scroll needs to die in a fire. I hated it when Cheezburger implemented it and I will hate it here. Getting back to the top of the page is a royal pain in the ass if you're scrolling for several pages, and half the time at the Cheezburger site it won't take me all the way up. I hope your coders are more competent than theirs, but this is LJ and I have no faith that they are. The UP button that takes you all the way back to the top is good, but I've got no confidence that it'll work 100% of the time because, well. This is LJ.

Were people beating on your doors demanding this or did your coders just wake up one day and say "Oh, hey, we need to justify our paychecks again, let's put in this new thing that will drive the users crazy and send people to DW in droves again!"

Also, the new friends page is ugly as hell. I hate the static buttons on the side of the page (whatever the hell they do). Whoever designed those damn things needs to be fired from the internet. At least make them smaller, because for those of us with small screens they take up way too much damn room and block content.

Also, I have to scroll sideways to read entries, so if you've got a fixed-width thing going here, STOP THAT SHIT RIGHT NOW. I don't want to maximize my browser.

Apparently "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is anathema around here. If it ain't broke, LJ will fix it 'til it is.

EDIT: Also, no word on when you're going to fix the bug that makes it so that long comment threads break the page. Instead of implementing new crap that no one wants, how about you get the coders to work on something that is actually friggin' broken and has been for friggin' ages???

green_knight

October 30 2012, 21:55:22 UTC 6 months ago

I don't want to maximize my browser.

I do a fair amount of reading on my iPhone. I scroll sideways often enough as it is. A wider layout means I'll have to wait until I am back home.

What it will mean in reality is that I'll switch my reading to DW because I'm fed up with 'updates' that break functionality. What's the point in a 'betatest' that ignores everybody who says 'too much white, giving me headaches, too resourcehungry, not functional' and rolls out the update anyway?

Please make this new version optional, rather than mandatory. I like LJ because of the way my friends page is structured now, and the control I have as far as display and layout.

I don't wanna see the stupid and boring background all the time I'm on my friends page. And I don't wanna see the LJ navigation all the time. It doesn't look good and I wanna see my own style on the friends page, too. Why did I decide to use an extra style for my journal? Because a white page is boring and I need colour. At my journal and my friends page. Next step will be to delete all style/layouts and all will be white, huh? I don't like it.

October 30 2012, 17:43:05 UTC 6 months ago

Don't forget the light blue. So, everything will be white and light blue. I hope LJ decides to send free sunglasses to me and each user then.

I am using the little cell phone battery I have left (since I am currently without power from the hurricane) to plead with you not to make these changes permanent. I don't mind it if you keep it as something you can opt in or opt out of, but please don't force it on us. I think you will see a mass exodus if you make these changes. Please please please listen to your customers on this.

brickhousewench

PLEASE consider coding in the option to keep the old friends page. Many of us do not like the new format and would prefer to stay with the old style.

It just amazes me how you keep ignoring the hundreds of comments AGAINST this new version of the friends page.

You could have - you know as a polite way towards your user base, paying or otherwise - at least ACKNOWLEDGE their opposition against this.

Maybe REASSURE them that there will be an opt-out option, instead of going forth like a blind cow!!!!!!! (apologies to the cow)

Nobody wants anything that takes away their customized journal style. This is one of the only places I can hide from the entire effing world being like tumblr. If this change is forced upon me, it's probable that I'll migrate everything to Dreamwidth, where I've already been shadow posting everything anyway.

Listen to your users, dammit.

I have beta-tested this. I beta-tested it for all of thirty seconds. That was quite long enough to convince me that I hated it. Please make this optional, not compulsory. It's too white and hard on the eyes, it takes too long to load, you can't turn off infinite scrolling, it's not customisable, it sucks. I do not want this. I did not pay you money to make my account harder for me to use. (Why don't you fix some stuff that is actually broken, like the fact that the 'updates' on the homepage don't actually update?) Please listen to your users and customers - you are making a mistake with this so-called improvement!
