Brad Fitzpatrick ([info]bradfitz) wrote in [info]news,

Fund raiser!

The upgrade last night was a pain, but boy did it pay off... I'm looking at stats for all the machines and it's amazing what a difference it made. Hell, just use the site... incredibly fast. We're pushing out by far record bandwidth and the database isn't even breaking a sweat.

However, this isn't time to get too happy .... we need to stay ahead of the problems. We did better this last round of problems than the first one (the slowness only lasting a few days), but our idea from here on out is to have as few problems as possible. We pretty much have the money and talent we need now to keep livejournal always running fast and we're going to work to do even better.

To raise the last bit of cash we need for our new database server, we're having a fund raiser. The idea is to raise $10,000 as quickly as possible ... "100 people, 100 bucks".

Go check it out. Even if you don't have $100 to spend right now, there's some good reading on that page if you're interested in LiveJournal's present status and future plans.

wait, question, ..if it is 100 for permanent..what about if you just bought a paid account..

[info]bradfitz

March 16 2001, 14:10:34 UTC 11 years ago

That's addressed on the page.... you can transfer your remaining months to somebody else.

The idea here isn't to buy permanent accounts as much as it is to give LiveJournal $100 for the new servers.

Awww...Brad... you just had to make an "all your base" reference on the top of the page, didn't you? *shakes head*

March 16 2001, 14:26:38 UTC 11 years ago

I'm sorry --- I couldn't help it.

I hate writing to begin with, but when I have to write boring stuff like headings it gets old writing boring stuff like "Intro" or "Welcome" or "What is this?".

Spicing it up a little (even if it's a corny all your base reference) makes the writing a little less painful. :)

Mkay, transfer done. When/how do we find out when it's done?

Re:

Thanks!

I'll email you when it's setup.... I haven't written a tool to automate it yet. (transferring the remaining time to another account is a little tedious to do by hand....)

I'll try to do it within an hour or so. It won't be any later than tonight, though.

Question. . .

I'm up to pitching in for LiveJournal, I just have one question. . .

Is there any chance I can go ahead and drop you the cash, and decide in a few days who to transfer my remaining paid time to? ;-)

[info]bradfitz

March 16 2001, 14:49:22 UTC 11 years ago

Re: Question. . .

Sure, that works.

When your 'paidfeatures' attribute in the database changes from 'paid' to 'on' (permanent), the 'paiduntil' field is still untouched, so it'll be possible to move it.

Not that I haven't given at the office, so to speak, or that I don't owe a couple thousand to the I.R.S. soon... but if ninty-nine others are willing to pony up the money, I will gladly do so.

Permanent account meaning for as long as LiveJournal exists, eh? Our journals kept online in their pristine form for what could be hundreds of years?!

Sounds damn cool. Maybe if we give people enough details about ourselves, one day someone could use our journals to make holographic simulations based on our pix, choice of words, interests, and behaviors, etc...

(Just in case someone reads this in the far distant future... hi there. Don't eat the yellow snow.)

You are going to keep a backup of our lives, I hope. I'd hate to become corrupted. ;)

Unless you've got a stash of reserve cash and are confident you'll get a job soon, keep your money.

Eating and rent/utilities is more important than a new server. :)

i'm in...

paypal accepted my payment, so it's on it's way.

i have been a livejournal member for over almost a year and i think you are doing a great job. i am happy to support LJ.

one of the reasons i am so supportive, is YOUR attitude about the whole thing. for example, you give a free service, but are grateful for any help. and you seem to really 'care' about LJ.

thanks for doing such a good job and putting so much of yourself into it.

keep up the great work.

I am seriously be tempted to get one of these even though converting the currency its a bit over $200 in my currency but for the fact that Paypal is only for US people i believe. And if i was to use money order then throw the $20 or so extra for the money order makes this an expensive proposition. So please reconsider your international users so it can be just a bit easier for us paying thanks.

[info]bradfitz

March 16 2001, 15:03:35 UTC 11 years ago

Re:

PayPal does accept international payments now, I believe, but I don't know how well. If you look into it, let us know how it works.

Unfortunately ibill.com is incredibly difficult, otherwise I'd set that up.

Sorry. :(

If you have suggestions on another good service we could use, I'm all ears.....

I'm in. I got paid today. I've got $100, and if it means not having to remember to renew, I'm all for that. Paypal didn't give me an option to tell you who to transfer the remaining months of my paid account to, though. Can I just email that separately?

How about you give me $100 dollars and I'll give up my permanent account. ;)
Here's a better idea. Whoever gives livejournal $100 can kick me in the nuts. And if somebody gives $1,000 they can beat my half to death.

Hmm, OK then.

*thinks*

So far, I've bought myself a paid account, three friends paid accounts, and bought Brad two DVDs. That totals about $140. And here goes another $100... Man, the new servers better like me :o)

March 16 2001, 17:36:40 UTC 11 years ago

Re:

I thought about that.... I could have just said "only paypal!" but then some paypal payments would still trickle in regardless, so I figured, "why restrict those that can't use paypal or don't want to?" so I'll be lenient for 3 or 4 days until after we reach 100, to let some trickle in.

w00t! :P

Okay, with this new account, I prepare myself for permanence!

Sorry, kinda fscked up, didn't realize PayPal had changed their system. I added cash to my account there, drawing my regular bank down pretty low. Then I tried to go through your little setup, and PayPal wants to do some "e-check" thing for $100 since my payPal account isn't up to $100 at the moment, and won't be until the other transaction goes through. I tried to cancel the other transaction, but I saw no means to do so. I would just use the e-check but that would overdraw my account. In short, my cash will be on hold for ~4 days as PayPal and my bank do the "let's exchange money" tango.

Regardless, count me in. I wanna be permanent!
