The New Code
LiveJournal's now running The New Code that we've been working on the past number of weeks.

The new code kicks ass in so many ways that I won't try to explain it concisely. I'm not too good at that, anyway. Let's just say the new code is totally sweet.

The new code supports clusters, but we're not using them yet. Tomorrow or so we will be. In the meantime, there's about a billion other things that should make the site faster.

But, there are probably bugs. 6 good bugs were found during the beta test and none have been reported since. But we'll be watching things closely.

More news coming over the next few days as we get the clusters online. We have a ton of new hardware arriving next week. Then we get to start moving users to clusters and things get even faster.

I see the "nc=x" parameter has disappeared from talkread links. Is that temporary or is it going to be replaced by something else or what?

If the answer to this is blatantly obvious somewhere and I'm just being an idiot, don't bother responding.

it'll be a user option.

some people love it, some people hate it.

for now it's off for everybody until somebody that loves it makes the option. :-)

Not for this, but for the next big change it will be a good idea unless you only ever post in English... LiveJournal's changing so that it can support non-roman characters properly, so people who want to be able to type in say, Cyrillic, will need a new version of their favourite client when the time comes.

Strange window

A couple of times when I have gone to a friends' journal a window pops up asking for my network name and password and the resource is called "FUCK_OFF_JOURNAL_LOSER" It's popped up on two journals I've checked so far. Naturally I did not enter anything, but it kinda worried me.

Did this code change remove the fuck-authority block or is something else going on? We've had a few support requests opened about it this morning: 34383, 34374 and 34364.

seem to be having a little problem with my personal info. i was changing my bio yesterday. today i noticed a mistake and tried to change it but no changes seem to be saving at all.
every time i look at my bio it's the same. i go back into "personal info" and the code and all is exactly the way it was before i made the changes. ???
weird.

would this be a bug?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]tgape
2002-02-02 01:20 pm UTC (link)
As I understand it, no. But it makes it more possible.

Basically, location searches come back sometime after everybody's moved to clusters. (The clustering takes care of the main performance issues, and then [info]bradfitz and everybody has time to get location searches reimplemented in a nice, server-friendly fashion.)

Looks nice.

I'm glad to see the clustering is coming along so well. It's something I know has been your baby for a while, and the codebase seems to be a lot more stable this time around.

That being said, good luck with the switchover :)

The width of my friends page is all wrong! The text just goes on forever and does not wrap. This has only happened recently so is it caused by the new code? (It's not just me it happens to either, other lj users have commented on it.)

[info]guppygrrl

Same here.

But since it started before Brad implemented all these changes (at least a week ago, for me...), I doubt it has anything to do with the new nifty stuffs. *grin*

Have you tried opening a support request about it? http://www.livejournal.com/support/

Apparently. It even has a patch in review, and everything! (So it's basically just a matter of giving people enough time to look it over until Brad feels confident enough to muck with the production servers and BREAK EVERYTHING release the new code to production.)

many reports of new icons not uploading properly

There are at least four reports in the support area that new icons aren't uploading properly. I've had this problem as well. (I'm using that broken icon at the moment, called "george")

Just wanted to bring it to your attention.

You guys are awesome! I'm so grateful for this site!

Yeah, its making me sad. I removed one of my icons to upload a new one, it was broken, I thought there was something wrong with the pic. then I tried reuploading the icon I used to have, because I was sure nothing was wrong with it, but it was broken, too. So I assume its something wrong with the system.

I started my journal at 3am on Saturday, and so when you guys had to go down, I could not immediately post my entry. But then I also could not post on SUnday morning around the same time. By 7:30 am Saturday I was free and clear, but it is that same time today and I really want to post but I can't. I love the journal, and in a month or two I will even start paying for it: Not because I want more features, but because I want to support it. I want to be online at 3am and off long before sunrise. Will I be able to? I guess that's what I am wondering. Sorry I rambled...

Possible bug (or unlikeable feature) in notification to Netscape 4.7 users
[info]level_head
2002-02-03 10:19 am UTC (link)
I am a new user of LJ - kudos on a fine product and team!

I am using NS 4.7 under W2K, and have Notify on, which works very well.

When replying, using the form included in the message, touching the {Delete} key instantly kills the entire message including, of course, the reply.

I have examined Netscape for possible settings to address this, to no avail. I also do not know if this is a very recent situation, as I noticed this Friday 2/1, just after signing up for LJ.

Good luck with the product and the community!
