Call for translators...
All native speakers of non-English languages, if you're interested in translating LiveJournal to your mother tongue, check out [info]lj_translate. (right now, only the userinfo is interesting)

To switch your language:
http://www.livejournal.com/setlang.bml

The German and Danish teams are already hard at work:
http://www.livejournal.com/translate/

The percentages on that page only reflects the percentage of text that's available for them to translate... not how much English I've put into the translation database. As I continue working, their numbers will keep going down. Mwa hah hah. ;-)

The only language I could help out with is German, and you've already found translators for that. I would nevertheless volunteer to look over it when it's done; in fact, I would ask to be allowed to. No offense to the translators, but usually it's better if someone proofreads it all.

Didn't get far following links, eh? :-)

[info]lj_translate links to [info]lj_deutsch, where everybody is discussing the German translation.

In fact, I'm requiring all translation teams to make a language community so they CAN agree on the terminology.

As for joining them, you totally should... there are three of them already, but they'd love all the help they can get.

All native speakers of non-English languages, if you're interested in translating LiveJournal to your mother tongue...

Um, not to be rude or anything, but you don't need "native speakers." You need translators. If they're also native speakers, so much the better--but a non-native, trained translator will do a much better job than a native speaker with no translation training/experience.

This is what the government is learning from its snafus lately--its only requirement for interpreters/translators was "Native speakers of Pashto" or whatever. Not pretty.

Ideally, I'd say each translation team should include at least one person who is a translator, to translate; AND at least one person who is a (college-educated) native speaker with computer knowledge to proofread. If both were native speakers AND translators, that would be better--but both qualities, not just "native speakers," are necessary.

hell, yes! i'm an applied linguistics student (majoring in translation) and we learn a lot of things that laymen have no idea about. people think that it's so easy to translate. it's not. i totally agree that being a native speaker doesn't necessary make you competent in translating into your mother tongue.

Why not additionally use the HTTP Accept-Language request header? This would allow visitors to the site, as well as potential new users, media, etc... to see the site in their language regardless of if they are a member or not (and further customized their journal to specify the language). It also means the user doesn't have to first know English to change the language...

I'm dutch but don't want the dutch version of lj. So I changed it on http://www.livejournal.com/setlang.bml, but every time I close my browser and look at livejournal later again, it's back to the dutch version again and I have to change my lang. pref. again. Is there a way to avoid having to do this all every time?

there are a lot of people grumpy about having to chang ethier whole browser settings now so that LJ will still show up in english.

Setting it to another language should be optional an dnot somewhat forced on people just becuase they have a german computer with german browser settings.

Especially those that have had an LJ for a while and are USED to the english terms..

will this be changed? I heard TONS of complaints.

The translation is a nice idea. There are still people that aren't too familiar with the English language. I started lj today and suddenly the navigation on the left side has changed. And I am very sorry to say, but the translation of it is .... clumsy.
How do I get the English back? The Dutch version is teethgrinding, really.

i posted a complain into a reaaaaaaly wrong community journal, but okay.. i did get some links that helped me out and did get me here.
I HATE the fact my left side of the screen is suddenly in Dutch.
Not to speak of the quality of the dutch.
I know my english sucks too, and this will probably will be full of mistakes, but hey, that's my problem.
I just like it to be in english again. *boehoehoehoe***
I have changed my settings, but i can do it every time i log in again.
And no, i don't want to change my whole settings on my browser.
Why can't we just chose??
When i look at some developer pages.. than i could use a dutch version sometimes.
But i like my left side of the screen to be in english.
Thnx if that's somehow possible in the future.
Lot's of friends of mine are complaining too. They can't find their way anymore.
