Weblogs.com
We've added optional support to ping Weblogs.com when your journal updates. (public entries only)

This is a paid-user feature. To enable it, go to:

http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml

Be aware that Weblogs.com doesn't update instantly.

(The Weblogs.com equivalent for all LiveJournal users is the latest entries page)

Your latest base-data patch/update doesn't seem to be for weblogs pinging (even though it says it should be).

http://cvs.livejournal.org/browse.cgi/livejournal/bin/upgrading/base-data.sql.diff?r1=1.55&r2=1.56

Also, editinfo seems to be propogataing slowly. I don't know if you can change that, but until it's done, you'll probably get at least a few "i can't see it!" comments.

I didn't notice when the title option went in either, but I don't think it works properly, at least on my friends page. Maybe its not in S2 or not in Generator yet.

(Reply to this) (Thread)(Expand)

[info]jackola
2003-04-17 02:20 pm UTC (link)
Correct. The new title function only works on S1 styles at the moment. Also, it only works on the system styles. Custom styles have to be edited to show the new change.

However, your title *is* showing on your LASTN page and on your friends page.

So, um, what does this do, besides tell a random other website that our site's been updated?

Is there any benefit to telling this website my lj has updated? Is there any reason I would want to do this? Does this have something to do with blogrolling? I would assume so, but the documentation on all these websites is CRAPPY.

Purposes of weblogs.com
[info]owlfish
2003-04-17 03:14 pm UTC (link)
It could have something to do with Blogrolls, but those are optional. Services which rely on weblogs.com include Technorati (fun for seeing who is linking to whom, including those not on LJ) and BlogShares.com.

Unless you're interested in seeing how your weblog fits into non-LJ networks or are a publicity hog, enablying the feature is pretty optional.

[info]leprosy

Is the LJ latest updated page only supposed to reference public entries?

One of the entries I clicked led to the warning you get when trying to access protected entries.

I suppose the person whose entry it was could have changed the protection manually, however I would be upset if any portion of a protected entry of mine got published on the update page. This especially concerns me in that if there is no subject line, the first line of the entry is used.

Can we opt out of this feature? I'd frankly like to turn off my RSS syndication as well, since I don't want robots crawling through my entries.

And yes, I am overly paranoid.

[info]jackola

This feature only works on public entries, yes. If a user makes an entry public, then changes it after posting it, then the link will still be visible on weblogs.com.

You are already opt out of this feature. In order to opt-in, you have to check the option on the edit info page.

Also, RSS only reads your public entries as well. I do not think there is a way to turn indexing off for the RSS feed. However, if you never link to the RSS feed then the robots should never see it, I don't think.

I've noticed this as well...Does this feature work at all? I use the Semagic client, maybe it doesn't ping weblogs.com if you post using a client?

I did enable the option in my settings page, and I posted a public entry, but nothing showed up on Weblogs.com. I know that the manual update page for weblogs.com limits you to one update per 5 minutes, is it possible that only one update from LiveJournal is getting through to weblogs.com?

[info]amaiman

What data exactly does it send to weblogs.com? I would assume that it should be our journal title (not the entry subject) and the URL to the journal...Those are the fields on weblog.com's manual update form.

Which URL does it send? The /users/whoever one, or (preferred) the whoever.livejournal.com one?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

Re: What specific data is sent?
[info]amaiman
2003-04-21 10:38 pm UTC (link)
Ok, answering my own questions. After reading through the source code, it appears that it's supposed to send your journal title (from your user prefences), and the /users/whatever URL.

However, it appears that this entire feature is broken, as LiveJournal isn't actually sending ANY pings to weblogs.com (my post never showed up there, and only one LiveJournal is showing as being updated in the last 4 hours according to weblogs.com, that one was probably manually entered).

Any ideas on when this feature will actually work?
