txtlj and mobile features
Hi everyone. I guess it's my turn to do a news post! I'm Abe, and I get to listen to Kimmie stress out about her spreadsheets. ;)

TxtLJ (sponsored by [info]ampdmobile)

Last week, Kimmie announced that we opened TxtLJ to paid/permanent users, and we're now opening it up to all account levels!

Once you set up TxtLJ, you'll be able to send text messages to TXTLJ (89855) to post to your journal, add people to your Friends list, and read your Friends page. (See the full command list for more.) So, for instance, you'd post to your journal like this:

We've also expanded our notifications system, so you can choose to receive notifications via text message, too.

You can send an unlimited number of text messages to TxtLJ. Unfortunately, we do have to pay for every text message we send out, so they're restricted based on your account level:

* Plus users get 3 free notifications per month
* Paid users get 10 free notifications per month
* Permanent accounts get 10 15 free notifications per month

If you want more, you can buy add-on packages of 100 or 250 notifications at any time. Also, if you set up TxtLJ during October, you'll get 10 free notifications. More information is available in our FAQ. (Keep in mind that your phone provider's standard text messaging charges may apply.)

Unfortunately, TxtLJ is currently only available to users in the United States, and only with supported carriers listed on the TxtLJ page. We're working on adding support for Alltel, Nextel, and T-Mobile, as well as international support, as soon as we can. AT&T Wireless customers (now Cingular Blue) won't be able to use TxtLJ currently, but we'll see what we can do about that.

More Voice Post Numbers!

We've acquired more voicepost numbers in the United States -- we've added numbers in a bunch of states, including California, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, Florida, and Texas. If you have a Paid or Plus Account, you can set up voiceposting at any time. :)

We're also looking into setting up a toll-free number, in case you don't have a voicepost number near you. International users: we're looking into various voice over IP gateways. If you know of any that you'd like to recommend to us, send us an email at feedback@livejournal.com to let us know. In the meantime, you can use Gizmo/LJ Talk to make voiceposts if you'd like to.

There are a number of other ways you can interact with LJ through your mobile phone: you can receive text messages from your friends and post to your journal via email, too. For more information, check out mobile features overview.

LiveJournal announcements

We know we don't include everything that's happening on LiveJournal here in [info]news posts -- there's so much going on that we save News for the things that we think most users want to know about. We use other communities to go into more depth, because that way you can decide what you want to keep up with. If you're curious and want more information on LJ happenings, you might want to consider watching the following:

[info]lj_releases -- Every time we make changes to the site, we'll post here listing off all the changes -- both bugfixes and enhancements.

[info]lj_biz -- For insight and information about the business-related decisions we make, such as our reasons for creating Horizon, information about sponsored communities, and so on.

[info]feedback -- If we have questions for you about anything LJ-related we'll post here.

[info]paidmembers -- All paid members are added to this community when they first pay for their accounts, since it includes information that's relevant only to paid users.

[info]lj_ads -- Members of our Sales team post here to announce and discuss things relating Plus accounts, advertising, and sponsorships on LiveJournal.

[info]lj_design -- Our Design team posts here about their role in creating new stuff -- designing themes, working on page layouts, and the like.

[info]status and [info]lj_maintenance -- If there's any unexpected (or expected!) downtime, our operations team will post here to let you guys know.

You can also check out the complete list of communities run by the LJ team, too.

Join the LJ/Six Apart Team

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area and are interested in joining the Six Apart family, check out our job listings. In particular, we're looking for people to fill in Linux systems administrator positions, but we've also got openings in many other departments. The listings contain application info, if you find a position that suits you. (We have cookies, too!)

Have a happy rest of the week! :)

More voice post numbers in Virginia would be great. I don't understand why most areas of Virginia, including the Richmond/Central VA area and the VA Beach/Hampton area don't have any voice post numbers when apparently ever tiny town in New Hampshire has one.

Our phone # -> VOIP provider is based in New Jersey. When we set up phonepost a few years ago we got all of the phone numbers they had available, which were centered more densely around their offices. Now they're expanding so we're able to get numbers in new areas, but still not all. That's why we're investigating a toll-free number to get the rest of the US and other options for international users.

We don't seem to get any at all in Europe - we just subsidise the US by paying as much for our accounts but not getting things like text and voice posts at all...

It's very hard, and pricey to offer international toll-free numbers when the company is a relatively small company based in California.

Oh yes - we quite understand this - what really pisses off those of us outside the USA is still paying just as much, and getting 'bouncy bouncy, aren't we wondeful?' messages from LJ telling us how clever they are to be giving these things to other people.

What many of us most want is for them to spend time, energy, research and money on getting LJ actually working properly again, rather than taking minutes, even on broadband, to load a single page, regularly being unavailable, and generally creaking - currently they are like people who are painting their house pretty colours whilst the roof has got holes in it. Only they are only painting the rooms of their favourite kids - the rest of the family don't even get that! /rant!

Would you rather we posted to news saying "Sorry, guys, we couldn't get a feature set up in Europe, so instead we're not going to offer it to anyone at all"? I acknowledged in the post itself that we know we don't have international support and that we're looking into it; what more would you like us to do, at this point? We know that not everyone can use these features, yes, but does that mean we can't be excited to be offering them anyway? You can't even argue that we're ignoring everyone else, since I made a point to specifically address that in my post.

What's broken about LJ? Seriously, I'd like an answer, and I'm not being sarcastic; what are the things that you run into, on a regular basis, that you think we should be putting time and energy into fixing?

I know there've been some slowness recently but every time they've come to our attention, we work non-stop till we fix them, and we generally fix them within a few minutes. (Sometimes longer, but never extended periods of time like there used to be -- to use your analogy, it's more like a door flew open and we went and closed it, rather than the roof having holes in it.) We monitor these sorts of things 24/7, and we have a team of people who are awake 24/7 so that they can handle these issues as soon as they arise. I think saying "regularly being unavailable" is kind of pushing it, but if it's actually legitimate, then it's the first I've heard of this problem.

Thanks for replying.

Actually re "Sorry, guys, we couldn't get a feature set up in Europe, so instead we're not going to offer it to anyone at all"? as my friends in South America, China, the Phillipines, Australia and NZ can't access them either it should be more 'sorry this is only available within North America' - presuming that it is available to my friends in Canada, I haven't had time to ask them.

Those of us outside the catchment area for all the fancy add-ons would mainly prefer you to either charge those who can use them extra to do so, or lower the subscription cost for those of us who cannot access them - it is difficult to see how LJ can justify charging us all the same for different levels of service.

As for the problems - the main ones are as I said - in the last two or three months LJ often takes around 5 times longer to load pages than it has over the previous couple of years, and then often what I see is 'The page cannot be displayed' which had only ever happened before when I went to LJ during the Great Crash of 2005.

I might have worried that this was a problem with my own computer or our broadband, except that (1) other pages I visit regularly, such as my bank or my GJ account, still load as quickly as ever and (2) over the last two months almost every day someone or another on my FL is complaining about the same thing.

We kind of get the feeling that when you notice the door is open you do indeed shut it, but you are still too busy decorating the bedrooms of the favoured few to have noticed the hole in the roof. I somtimes feel as if I am living in the undecorated and wet attic.

Again, thank you for replying, it is appreciated.

Honestly, they should ONLY be charging those using the features. People in other countries should not be charged, because this service is not available to them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing that these things are happening. Often on my other journal I'll get errors such as certain style sheets are broken when viewing my own journal and/or in my friends list, and this is after I refresh it more then two to three times.

Oh I agree completely. Livejournals policy is kind of like, "this is broken, this isn't working very well, this is slow, but WE GOT NEW FEATURES!!"

Heh.

I agree with your point - but why not register your displeasure by not renewing your paid account once it expires? I've been using the free account for a few years now and it's not so bad.

I wouldn't complain if I were you--I live where LJ is based in one of the most populated areas of California and we JUST got voice post phone numbers. I feel your pain, though. Trust me.

No, they had 'em before, like, years ago when the feature was first implemented. So did Michigan. But something stupid happened and all the numbers went bye-bye. I had just put the A2MI voice-post number on my speed-dial, too. I'm still not sure what happened to all the numbers there used to be, but then again, I haven't been keeping up with LJ as much since I went and found something vaguely resembling an off-line life.

You know what? I don't understand that, either.

And I'm from New Hampshire, so my view ought to count. ; )
