Hello, everyone!

We've made some exciting changes in the last couple weeks and we want to make sure you have all the details, so let's get right to them!

Recent Releases
  • We're very happy to let you know that your Friends page is staying! We've heard you about wanting to keep the current version of your Friends page (styled the same as your journal itself), so you can now keep your current Friends page style even in the redesigned version of the site!

-- This URL ( will continue to show your current Friends page style.

-- This URL ( will show the new redesigned Friends feed style.

This release also fixed an issue with the Edit Journal Privacy tool, allowing Plus/Paid/Permanent users to once again edit the security of past entries all at once. (This issue only affected the use of the mass privacy editing tool itself; the actual security of entries was never at risk.) This release also added the ability to add your Links List as a widget to the new Friends feed, so check out this release post for all the details!

  • Comment subject lines are back for the system style comment pages! Comment subject lines are now an option you can turn on or off for your journal or community. This release also made it easier to reach the full options page when adding memories (so you can categorize and choose keywords when adding a memory), so head on over to this release post for all the info.

  • Lastly, today's minor release lets you change the order of displayed widgets on the new Friends feed. A few bugs were also fixed, so check out this release post for the full list.

We're continuing to use the lj_feedback community to get your thoughts on things, and you've been great about providing detailed responses to our recent posts -- thank you! We're still going through all of your great responses to our most recent post about how to make it easier to find new friends and interesting communities on LiveJournal, so be sure to comment and give us your ideas if you haven't done so yet (or if you've thought of something new to add).

Keep Up with All the News
For all the details about changes to LiveJournal as they happen, be sure to watch the lj_releases community. We'll also continue to ask for your opinions in lj_feedback , so you may want to keep it on your watch list as well! You can choose to watch or track these communities using the links in the light blue option bar on their Profile pages.

So that's it for now! Have a great weekend, and we'll see you again soon! :)

Site redesign feedback

We wanted to post here to let you know that we've been reading your feedback, to show you what the most common feedback we have received is, and to give you an opportunity to let us know what else we may have missed. So far, what we know is:

1) You don't like how everything just suddenly changed with no warning or initial announcement.

2) The colors are too light. Especially with regards to comment pages (both header colors and the grey text color), text entered into the Update page, the entry page text, and links/lj tags which you have visited look too similar to those you haven't.

3) You want more customization options for the friends feed. You want to be able to change more than just the background color/image, and also want to change the text colors, link colors, other foreground colors, etc.

4) Margins need to be fixed on entry pages. There is a small margin on the left side of the page, then a very large one on the right side. This problem is further compounded when you see that the comments on the same page don't follow the same margins.

5) You don't find the homepage very useful. The Ratings/Top LJ feature isn't very good at identifying interesting content, and it commonly shows entries that are in Russian.

6) The Social capital & Ratings sections on profiles aren't relevant and take up too much space. The statistics column itself is taking up too much space on the page.

7) The sidebar on the Friends feed should be removed if all widgets have been hidden, allowing feed content to take up this space.

8) The widget for LiveJournal Today on the Friends Feed should respect the setting for "show multiple entries from same community" from the homepage/main Ratings, and the default behavior should be to show only 1 entry per user/community.

9) The rounded corners of userpics aren't well liked.

10) The lj-cut should still have customizable text.

11) Links to Scrapbook and the Upload userpics page are needed in the site menu. The current display of data on the menu page is also confusing. Here is an alternate list of how the menu could potentially appear that we would like your feedback on (Is this better? What should change? What's missing?)

We know that things changing abruptly can be frustrating, and that we don't have the greatest track record when it comes to making changes based on your feedback. We're working on changing that, and want you to know that we are taking all of your feedback on the redesign very seriously, and will be making changes based on it.

LiveJournal not affected by Heartbleed

Dear users,

As you might have heard, a major vulnerability in SSL (the secure channel used for HTTPS) has been detected recently. As many as two thirds of internet sites were affected, including social networks and major web sites.

We are happy to confirm that LiveJournal is not vulnerable and has not been affected at all.

Meanwhile, in the past 12 months we have been working hard to deploy many security features to protect user data.

Nevertheless, even though LiveJournal was not affected by the Heartbleed bug, changing your password is still a good idea, especially if you use similar passwords on other sites whose data may have been compromised. If you haven't changed your password in the last year, we recommend that you do so now.

With release 106, the page for managing your tags has been updated. It now includes the following abilities:

1) You can now merge tags. When you rename a tag to another tag name which already exists, it will combine those two tags into a single tag using the name you specify.

2) You can select up to 10 of your tags and enter new tag names to add to all entries which use one or more of those selected tags.

If you run into any issues using this new page, please comment to this entry in lj_releases to let us know. Thanks!

Release 105 is now live for the LiveJournal site.

New features:
-- Communities can now have custom security groups created for them. Only community owners and maintainers can create or post to custom security groups for the community. A new security level of 'maintainers' has also been created, which can be used by the community owner/maintainers to post entries that will only be visible to the current owner/maintainers of the community.

-- Community owners & maintainers can now opt to receive pingback notifications when their community is mentioned by others on LiveJournal.

Bug fixes:
-- Notifications are now sent correctly for replies to anonymous comments.
-- Incorrect profile page friend & membership counts are fixed.
-- Links to ICQ accounts in the External Services section of the profile no longer link to an invalid URL.
-- If a user you have banned uses your username in an entry or comment, it will no longer generate a pingback notification.

Please see this post in lj_releases for full information and links to the pages where community maintainers can set up these new features.

Release #103 now live

Release 103 is now live for the LiveJournal site. A summary of the changes:

-- The criteria for defining inactive accounts has been adjusted slightly. Now, journals or communities that contain 2 or fewer entries can be considered to be inactive (as long as several other criteria are also met).

-- The 'adult concepts' setting has been removed, leaving only a single adult setting available named simply Adult Content. If your journal was using adult concepts, it no longer has any adult setting defined. If your journal is using the previous 'explicit adult content' setting, it has been converted to the new setting.

-- Some adjustments have been made to the suspicious login monitoring feature (which notifies you of potentially suspicious logins to your account) so that there should now be far fewer false positives.

-- Several bug fixes.

Please see this post in the lj_releases community for full details on all of these items. Thanks!
