We're excited to see a new design on the top of LiveJournal before we celebrate Gay Pride weekend with a rainbow header! As we get ready to join the parade, Frank would like to take a moment to commemorate the one-year passing of the King of Pop. Tell him your favorite Michael Jackson song or video, and he'll give you a glittering hand.

Important stuff to know:

  • Header design contest: We've extended the deadline to submit original header designs to June 30th, so keep on posting to [info]remixed. Images should be 900x90 pixels and should not violate copyright protections. Please incorporate the LiveJournal logo and menu template (you'll find them posted to the Profile page). The winner will be awarded 2,000 LJ Tokens. Finalists will receive 1,000 LJ Tokens. All other participants will get 500 LJ Tokens (only one award per user). We thank you for sharing your talent!
  • Oh Canada: We're relieved happy to announce that Canadian users should be able to record voiceposts longer than 60 seconds. If you're a Canadian user who uses this feature, we hope you'll try it out and let us know in comments if you can record voiceposts longer than a minute. We're still working hard on this issue, and we hope to get this resolved for all of our international users.
  • [info]gulf_aid_now: We're always delighted when we hear about LiveJournal users joining together to use their powers for good. [info]gulf_aid_now is currently hosting an auction to help clean up the devastating oil spill (LiveJournal has donated three annual paid accounts). If you know of other communities that are making a positive difference, please give us a holler in comments.
  • +1: We've introduced a '+1' button on [info]lj_photophile to help select photos for the weekly polls. We're eager to get your input on this new rating tool! Please comment on the latest photo poll to let us know what you think.

We've scored soccer balls for our paid users!

We've been hearing a lot of adrenaline-pumped rants and raves about 'football' lately, so we figured we'd get in the game. If you have a paid or permanent account, you can send five free soccer balls from Thursday, June 24th, at 4pm, PDT, until Monday June 28th, at 4pm, PDT! You'll see both the free and the $0.99 balls displayed until you've dribbled them to your friends. Please send only one at a time. In other words, you'll need to complete check-out and start a new order for each ball you kick. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and check your settings. Have a ball!

Give a purple rhino to support PFLAG pride!

In honor of Gay Pride week, we've welcomed back a dear friend: the beloved purple rhino. A little-known symbol of support for LGBTQ civil rights and social dignity, LiveJournal will donate 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of this vgift to PFLAG (we'll cover the payment processing fees). We thank you for helping us make a difference.

Blurb hearts LiveJournal users!

Blurb is offering LiveJournal users an exclusive, one-time discount on all purchases. While you can use this coupon to buy any of Blurb's wonderful publications, we highly recommend their LGBT collection. To take advantage of this special discount, please enter the appropriate code at checkout:

Gift shop, Rename Accounts, Repost feature, LJ Tokens
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

We've got some exciting updates for you this week! We've redesigned the Gift Shop and introduced LJ Tokens to improve virtual purchasing. We've added a user activity panel on the homepage to keep you up-to-date on messages, upcoming birthdays, and more! We've also simplified the rename account process and introduced a repost button that makes it easy for others to share and link back to your entries. While we check out these great new features, Frank has been battling a severe case of cabin fever. Tell him about your first major travel experience, and he'll zip you over a suitcase for your next voyage.

LiveJournal Shop and LJ Tokens

  • Gift Shop redesign: We've relaunched the Gift Shop to help you locate and purchase items more easily.

  • LJ Tokens: We've introduced a flexible, new way to pay for LJ services in the Gift Shop! LJ Tokens can be used to make one-time purchases of paid account time, buy userpic add-ons, vgifts, storage, and more. LJ Tokens replace gift certificates and eliminate the need to use an entire gift certificate for a single purchase or lose the balance. Now you can use LJ Tokens to pay for what you want and save the rest for another day! Based on feedback from our beta testers, here are a few quick facts to keep in mind:
    • Conversion rates: One LJ Token is worth $0.01 USD (although you'll receive discounts for purchasing LJ Tokens in greater amounts). This means you can purchase a one-year paid account for 2,500 tokens (i.e., $25 USD). You can purchase tokens in the following increments: 3,000 tokens for $25 USD; 1,000 tokens for $9 USD; 500 tokens for $5 USD.

    • Invisible tokens: If you make a purchase in the LiveJournal Shop (say, for userpic add-ons or vgifts), you will only see LJ Tokens if you have enough tokens to cover the entire order. Otherwise, your token balance will not display at all. In this instance, you will either need to pay by another method or purchase more tokens before you complete the transaction.

    • Bye bye gift certificates, hello LJ Tokens: You can still use the gift certificates you already have, but you can now send your friends LJ Tokens in any amount you like. LJ Tokens can be pooled and redeemed at any time! If you have gift certificates that were bought for you as a gift, you can use them to purchase LJ Tokens. Sorry, but gift certificates that were given out for free or as part of a promotion cannot be converted to LJ Tokens.

Important stuff to know:

  • Homepage update: We've added a user activity panel on the right side of the homepage to help you view recent activity in your journal, including comments, messages, and friending.

  • Rename Account: We've simplified the process for renaming your account so you no longer need to buy a rename token before you reinvent yourself. You can now rename your account as soon as your payment is credited. If you'd like to give a friend the ability to rename themselves, simply send them 1,500 LJ Tokens! (P.S. Don't worry, you can still use your existing rename tokens.)

  • Repost button: You can add a repost button that allows other users to share all or part of your entries on LiveJournal. Please note that you have to use the HTML editor to insert a repost button. This button is only intended for public entries (i.e., if your entry is marked friends-only and you add the repost button, the entry can be reposted publicly by others, although the original post will remain friends-only). In order to illustrate how this works, we've added spaces before and after brackets ("<", ">") below to avoid auto-formatting:
    • To add a simple repost tag, insert the following tag at the end of your post: < lj-repost button="Post this to your journal!" / >

    • To modify the text of the share button, use the following tag: "< lj-repost button="Modify your button text" >< /lj-repost >"

    • To enable reposting of an excerpt of your entry, insert the following tags: "< lj-repost >Here is an excerpt from my entry< /lj-repost >"

    • To modify the text of the repost button and enable users to repost an excerpt of your entry, insert the following tags: "< lj-repost button="Modify your button text" >Here is an excerpt from my entry< /lj-repost >"

We hope you enjoy these new features. We'll be back next week with more fantastic photos and fun with Frank & Meme.

We've got some tasty treats baking in beta this week. While we prepare to frost, Frank would like to take a few moments to celebrate all of you June babies out there. If you were born this month, send Frank a mushy MWAH, and he'll whoosh you over a hug coupon!

Important stuff to know

  • Header design contest: We've begun accepting entries for our next header contest. You can submit your original designs to [info]remixed. Images should be 900x90 pixels and should not contain copyright-protected images. Please incorporate the LiveJournal logo and menu template (you'll find them posted to the Profile page). In other words, you'll need to complete check-out and start a new order for each critter you send. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and check your settings. Please be advised that these lovin' lemurs are not house-broken (be sure to avoid chocolate and Red Bull after sundown).

Header Design Winner, ONTD!
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

After a healthy dose of LJ-drama, we're pleased to announce the winner of our third monthly header design contest. We've also cooked up some tasty, purplicious userheads on [info]ohnotheydidnt. Speaking of which, Frank was delighted to hear about your cooking foibles last week, since it helped ease his seasonal affective disorder, brought on by anti-climactic TV season finales. To comfort Frank in his time of need, he's hoping you'll share your own tales of media woe. Tell him which former television series you miss most, and he'll bake you up a luscious cupcake to sweeten your day!

And the winner is ...

We're thrilled to announce the winner of the third LiveJournal header design contest! Over 7,400 of you helped choose the design by [info]mitashade. Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in this contest. We'll be sending LiveJournal gift certificates to one and all on Tuesday, June 1st. You may now begin posting entries to [info]remixed for the next contest. In response to your requests, we've posted official rules along with LiveJournal logos and menu templates to the LJ News Contests Profile page, which should be used in all future submissions. We'll accept entries until Monday, June 21st at 3PM, PDT. We thank you, again, for sharing your passion and talent with the global LiveJournal community!

Important stuff to know

  • Purple reign: We've got an exciting announcement for all of you Oh no they didn't fans! ONTD members can now dress up in stylin' purple userheads! [info]frank couldn't wait to show his love! To get yours now, sign into LiveJournal, visit [info]ohnotheydidnt, click Rules & Info on the upper right corner, and then click Switch to ONTD userhead on the upper left side of the profile page. Remember, you MUST be a member of ONTD to get a purple userhead, which will color you purple wherever you roam. If you go through a blue period, you can always repeat these steps to switch back anytime.
  • Traveling light: We've cut the number of default entries on journals and communities from 20 to 10 entries. We expect this to decrease load times and improve site performance. To review or update your entries setting, click here.

Visit a decade of LiveJournal Russia!

We're thrilled to see a growing number of our Russian friends reading the news and submitting pictures to [info]lj_photophile. To celebrate the unique cultural heritage of LiveJournal, we're pleased to announce the publication of По живому. 1999-2009., which roughly translates into something like LJ-Uncut (*we have yet to get a translation that doesn't include dramatic physical gestures and arched eyebrows*). This anthology marks the first decade of LiveJournal in Russia. No matter what language(s) you speak, you'll enjoy a scenic journey through ten years of original photos, humor, artwork, comic strips, and more from our Russian friends. Congratulations to our team in Moscow on a book well done!

Header Design Contest, Shades for Paid Users!
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

We want to thank you for helping us narrow our header selection to a brilliant group of finalists (although all of the entries were painfully good). While we vote, Frank would like to convey his appreciation for sharing your touching bike stories. He was so delighted that he's hoping you'll take a few moments to describe your first solo cooking experience. Whether you struggled to flip pancakes, mix Ramen noodles, or burn a slice of toast, tell Frank about your first time in the kitchen, and he'll send you over a hearty strawberry. P.S. Epic fails are cordially invited!

Help us choose the winning header!

Last week, thousands of you voted for your favorite header designs. This week, we're hoping you'll help us choose the header that will appear on the top of LiveJournal throughout the month of June. Please note that you'll see a few extra stragglers mixed in, which were accidentally omitted during the first round (sincere apologies from the bleary-eyed editor). The polls will remain open until Wednesday, May 26th, at 3pm, PST, after which time we'll begin accepting submissions for the next contest. So, without further ado, poise your cursors and let the voting begin!

Dazzling shades for our paid users!

If you have a paid or permanent account, you can send five free glitterati sunglasses beginning Saturday, May 22nd at noon, PDT, and extending through Wedneday May 26th, at 4pm, PDT! You'll see both the free and the $0.99 sunglasses displayed until you've blinged them all to your friends. Please send only one at a time. In other words, you'll need to complete check-out and start a new order for each fantabulous pair of shades you send. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and check your settings. We hope these keep you concealed until the paparrazi have left the building!

We're thrilled to announce our third header design contest! We received so many brilliant entries that we couldn't pick a winner without you. To keep the good times rolling while we vote, Frank is asking you to put your pedal to the metal. Share a few tender words about your very first bike, and Frank will send you a shiny set of wheels!

Time for another Header design contest!

Once again, we were blown away by the fantastic variety of interpretations. Please choose one design from each group, and we'll run a second poll next week to determine which header will appear on the top of LiveJournal throughout the month of June. The winner will receive a $20 LiveJournal gift certificate. Finalists will be awarded $10 gift certificates. All other contributors will receive $5 gift certificates. (Only one certificate per user.) We'll begin accepting entries for the next header design contest the following week. Our heartfelt thanks to all participants for sharing your creativity with the extended LiveJournal community!

Shopping fix, Purge update, ONTD_AI!
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

We're delighted that so many of you have graciously offered to join our dedicated family of beta testers. Our community care team has invited around 20 new volunteers to participate in our next beta release. We thank you, again, for helping us make LiveJournal better! Meanwhile, back on the ranch, Frank is celebrating May babies. If you were born this month, shoot us a high five in the comments below, and Frank will send you a candy necklace!

Important stuff to know:

  • Billing issue: We're aware that some of the orders placed in the LiveJournal shop last weekend were not properly delivered (e.g., Userpic add-ons did not get credited after purchase and vgifts were not sent). We're happy to report that we successfully resolved this issue earlier this week, and all orders should now be processed. Thank you for your patience!
  • Purge update: A number of you have been asking when we'll start purging suspended accounts. The quick answer is we're still working out the technical details to make sure we get it right. We'll be sure to let you know when it's time to buy those rename tokens.

[info]ontd_ai turns one!

We want to extend a very happy birthday to [info]ontd_ai! Founded on May 15, 2009, [info]ontd_ai was created as a spin-off of [info]ohnotheydidnt, a place where American Idol fans could be "as crazy and ridiculous as possible," reports maintainer [info]soresubject. "After making a few headlines for crazy behavior on MTV.com, we started Twitter trending revolutions on everything from talented Idol contestants that haven't been signed to disgust with homophobia, which evolved into a powerful and universal message that took on a life of its own: #dontstopbelieving. And then there was our baby: charity. What started as a simple contest to show our appreciation for Adam Lambert spiraled into a remarkable event that forever changed our standards. No longer were we trolling the dungeon. Since last summer, we raised over $125,000 for various causes. We've given students the instruments, opportunities, and material to learn powerful skills. We've helped Haiti heal after their devastating earthquake. We've put shoes on children's feet, food on families' plates, helped doctors in their fight to find a cure for cancer, and so much more. As a community, we have gone through a lot in 12 intense months, but one thing that will never change is our love of helping others. This has been an amazing year, a crazy year, and a life-changing year. Fans are terrified of us and Idols have no idea what to make of us. If our wild gif spams don't scare you off, then come help us create a second year of epic. We'll be holding a contest next week to choose a vgift, which LiveJournal will sell to raise money for a charity our members will select. We hope you'll participate and thank you for your lulz, love, and support!" We, at LiveJournal, wish all of the fabulous, feminine benches at [info]ontd_ai a blowout birthday bash and a tremendous second year!

We've got milk and cookies for our paid users!

If you have a paid or permanent account, you can send five free afternoon snacks through Monday, May 10th at 4pm, PDT! You'll see both the free and the $0.99 cookies displayed until your friends have had their fill. Please send only one at a time. In other words, you'll need to complete check-out and start a new order for each tasty snack you send. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and check your settings. Naturally, the milk also comes in rice or soy, and the sandwich cookies are organically delicious, vegan, and gluten-free! Enjoy!

Spam offense, Beta testers, Server downtime, Blurb discount!
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

In the woozy afterglow of userpics, we've had an intense week here at LiveJournal. We've taken a step back to examine operational issues that will help us improve performance. While we continue to look within, we're hoping you'll distract Frank from nibbling on the wires by posting a two-line rhyme about your favorite snack beside a yummy userpic. Here is Frank's example: There's nothing that tickles my britches //like barbecued jeans with white stitches. To celebrate your virtual birthday, Frank will bake you up a delectable double-fudge cupcake!

Important stuff to know:

  • Billing issue: We understand that orders are not being credited properly. We're currently investigating the issue and hope to have it fixed as soon as possible.
  • Server Time-out: As part of our continuing efforts to improve site performance, our mighty ops guys will be performing database server maintenance in the key of E on Friday, April 30th, starting at 9PM, PDT, which will last from 30 minutes to an hour. We strongly encourage you to make the most of this downtime by sharing a special moment with your pets.
  • New Header: We hope you love our new header as much as we do! Thanks, again, to [info]snooby_23 for contributing the winning design!
  • Unite to fight spam: We want to thank you for helping us win the ongoing battle against spam. We hope you'll continue to check the report spam box whenever you delete spam entries/comments in your journals and communities! In addition, we recommend that you screen non-friend comments that contain links in your journal or communities. To update your settings, click on the Privacy Tab in your Account Settings, scroll down to Comment Screening, and choose 'Comments from non-friends with links' from the drop-down menu. You may also want to use the Anti-spam field on the same page to show a CAPTCHA to all non-friends who comment. If you're a community maintainer, you can alter these settings by selecting your community name in the 'Work as user' drop-down on that page and clicking Switch.
  • Be a Beta tester: In order to make our features more intuitive, we're hoping to expand our amazing group of beta testers. We're looking for around 20 additional users to help us test upcoming features. Your feedback will provide invaluable insights that will benefit all LiveJournal users! You don't have to be an experienced user to participate. In fact, we're especially eager to welcome newer users who are not particularly technical. If you'd like to throw your name in the hat, please tell us a little about yourself in [info]lj_releases at this post, i.e., how long you've been using LiveJournal, whether you consider yourself tech-savvy, tech-competent, or tech-phobic, and anything else you'd like us to know (e.g., whether you're a social media junkie or a casual user, etc.). We'll then invite 20 users to join our beta-testing group. We want to thank you, in advance, for helping us make LiveJournal even better!

Blurb discount for LiveJournal users!

In recognition of all the creative talent on LiveJournal, Blurb is extending LiveJournal users around the world a special 20 percent discount, which covers both self-publishing and book orders (worth up to $200 in savings). And, while you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by and visit our amazing anthology: LiveJournal: The First Decade. If you've already received a copy, we hope you'll post a comment and spread the good word!

A la carte userpics, Google Analytics, Frank recycles!
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

We're relieved delighted to announce that a la carte userpics are back in the shop! We fixed some of the outstanding issues (more details below). We'll be making additional tweaks, but we know how long you've been waiting, so we wanted to get them back on the shelf ASAP. Back on dry land, we're still celebrating this big blue marble we call home! Holler out a huzzah beside a tree-hugging userpic, and Frank'll send you a sweet sapling to honor your belated Earth Day birthday (since it's never too late to go green)!

Important stuff to know:

  • A la carte userpics are back: We've fixed the ability to purchase userpic add-ons through automatic payments. If you purchase add-ons with a one-time manual payment, you will now see details on how your purchase will be credited. Please note that if you already have at least one add-on package for your account, you can use the new Userpic Package Resizing Tool anytime to change how your add-on package(s) and time are arranged.
  • Google Analytics: We resolved the issue that was preventing you from tracking traffic to your Journal (this is not yet available for communities). Here's a reminder on how it works: If you have a Paid or Permanent account, sign up for a Google Analytics account, click on the Extensions tab in your Account settings, and paste the Google Web property ID number in the designated field. You'll need to allow up to 24 hours to view data!
  • ONTD: We're proud to report that our mighty ops guys (once again, dressed in full Ninja gear) successfully moved [info]ohnotheydidnt to another server, which has resulted in faster load times all around!
  • WB_Unplugged: We're excited that [info]wb_unplugged is taking off! We're hoping more of you will start posting questions! Just to clarify, our objective here is to inspire you to write about and discuss topics that are too edgy for our youth-friendly homepage (no obscenity, of course). We look forward to hearing what you've got to say!

May header design contest!

We've already received a number of fantastic entries for our next LiveJournal header contest. We'll be accepting submissions at [info]remixed through the end of the month! We'll then post polls so you can choose which design will appear at the top of LiveJournal during the month of June (btw, the second winning header will go live next week and will remain on LiveJournal through the end of May). The winner will be awarded a $25 gift certificate. Finalists receive $10 gift certificates. All other contributors will get $5 gift certificates (only one per user)! We can't wait to see your work!

Attention Paid and Permanent users: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle with Frank!

If you have a paid or permanent account, you can send five free low carbon vgifts through Monday, April 26th at 4pm, PST! You'll see both the free and the $0.99 eco-Franksters displayed until you've re-purposed all of them. Please send only one at a time. In other words, you'll need to complete check-out and start a new order for each vgift you send. If you're not receiving vgifts (from friends and/or Frank), you may have disabled them. To enable vgifts, visit Edit profile (under Profile), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and check your settings. Have fun saving the planet!

LiveJournal Major Notes: Userpics, Community stats, LJ Mobile, Header design winner!
Carved logo
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

We've waited so long for this moment that we hardly know what to say: We're thrilled to announce that a la carte userpics are here (and will back in the shop very shortly)! We'll give you more details below, but we couldn't contain our excitement another instant! In other news, we've relaunched the LiveJournal Mobile version and extended Stats to community maintainers. We're also making critical adjustments to improve site speed. Now that we're maxed out on puppy love, this week we're celebrating cool cats! If you've got a fabulous feline userpic, howl out a mighty meow beside it, and Frank'll honor your virtual birthday with a lovable ball of fluff!

We've got your a la carte userpics!

Update: We've temporarily suspended the ability to purchase userpic add-ons due to outstanding billing issues. We promise to have it back up and running as soon as possible. Thanks so much for your patience while we look into this.

Important purchase information: The number of packages you select in the Shop defines how many packages you wish to have, rather than how many additional packages you wish to purchase. So, if you already have one package of userpics and then you choose ‘1 package’ in the Shop, only the time of your 1 package of userpics will be extended, rather than the quantity of userpics. If you’d like to have 2 or 3 packages in total, then you need to select either '2 packages' or '3 packages' plus the duration of time. Please note that the total amount of time purchased for all userpic packages will be redistributed so all packages expire at the same time.

Here's the breakdown on packaging and pricing:

Important stuff to know:

  • Stats: In response to popular demand, we've now made Stats available to communities! If you're the maintainer of a Plus, Paid, or Permanent community, you'll be able to check how many people are viewing and commenting on your community posts! To view your community's Stats, visit Stats and choose the name of the community in the upper right corner beside Work as user. To upgrade your community from a Basic to a Plus or Paid account, select Manage under communities in the LiveJournal menu and click the Account tab to the right of the community you wish to upgrade. Remember, Plus communities are free and offer enhanced style and layout options, while displaying limited ads. Paid communities provide advanced features (including polls, increased Userpics, faster load times, comment editing, and photo storage) and are ad-free for all users.
  • Mobile: We've relaunched the LiveJournal LiveJournal Mobile version and LJ Windows application to offer you easier, enhanced access to LiveJournal wherever you go. iPhone users should continue to use the existing LiveJournal app.
  • Google Analytics: If you have a Paid or Permanent account, you can now use Google Analytics to track traffic on your journal (this is not yet available for communities). Once you've signed up for Google Analytics, click on the Extensions tab in your Account settings, and paste your Google Web property ID number in the designated field!
  • Notifications: We fixed one of the major bugs that was impeding the proper function of notifications. More improvements are on the way.
  • Unplugged: We recently launched [info]wb_unplugged, which is an edgier, adult-friendly version of Writer's Block. You can now access Unplugged from the Writer's Block panel on the homepage. To submit questions, simply join and post to [info]wb_unplugged or mail suggestions to the Writer's Block inbox! We can't wait to read your questions and answers!
  • Facebook & Twitter: For a touch of home away from home, join the LiveJournal Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter!
  • Site performance: LiveJournal has been experiencing intermittent sluggishness over the past week or so. We've already made a number of key changes to the backend (discussed in [info]lj_maintenance). We'll continue to dedicate significant time and resources to improve site performance. We want to thank you, again, for your understanding and support!

April header design contest winner!

Congratulations to [info]snooby_23, who won our second Header design contest! You're invited to submit entries for the next header contest at [info]remixed now through the end of the month. Submissions should be 900x90 pixels and include a placeholder for the LJ logo and menu. We'll hold a poll in early May to choose the next header, which will appear on the top of LiveJournal from mid-May through mid-June. The winner will receive a $25 gift certificate; finalists will get $10 gift certificates; and all remaining contributors will get $5 gift certificates. Thank you, again, for sharing your talent with the LiveJournal community!
